This 1982 Young Sun 43 Ketch is a classic Taiwanese-built offshore cruising yacht designed by Ron Amy from the era that featured substantial fiberglass construction, long keels, traditional interiors, and conservative sailing characteristics.

At roughly 49 feet overall, a 12-foot 11-inch beam and approximately a 6 foot 4 inches of draft, she has the proportions of a serious passagemaker rather than a coastal daysailer. The hull is a heavy, solid-fiberglass monohull built around a long full keel, with the rudder protected by the keel. Displacement is reported to be 32,000 pounds and an typical ballast of about 10,800 pounds.

This is not a lightweight performance cruiser that accelerates instantly when the wind comes up. Instead, the Young Sun 43 is intended to gather momentum and keep moving, with the long keel providing excellent directional stability. Contemporary descriptions characterize her as needing roughly 10-15 knots of wind before really coming alive, but once moving she has a comfortable motion and tracks exceptionally well. A realistic sailing speed is around 6 knots, while hull speed is calculated at approximately 8 knots.

The advantage of this Ketch-rigged example is the division of sail area between the mainmast and mizzenmast. Instead of concentrating a large amount of canvas in one mainsail, the ketch spreads the sail plan between several manageable sails. All but the main are roller furling rigged. This is particularly attractive for short-handed cruising, heavy-weather sail reduction, and balancing the helm. This design features a substantial bowsprit and a relatively conservative masthead-style arrangement.

One of the boat's most appealing characteristics is its traditional double-ended cruising profile. The canoe-like stern, pronounced bow, bowsprit, exterior teak, and substantial sheer give the boat a very purposeful appearance. The deck is relatively uncluttered and provide good passage from cockpit to foredeck. Forward, the boat has a deep anchor locker and substantial ground-tackle with a manual windlass.

Below decks, the Young Sun 43 is very much a liveaboard-oriented cruiser. Aft of the salon surounding the engine compartment you will find the galley starboard, and a work and storage area port. The owner calls it his garage. The salon area features an L shapped dinette on the starboard side with a settee and berth arrangement across on the port side. There is good standing headroom for a boat of this vintage (6 feet 6 inches). The galley to starboard features an icebox, gimbaled stove, and considerable storage. A small refrigerator freezer has been added near the navigation station. The fresh water tank holds 100 gallons.

The boat is powered with a Perkins 4-154 diesel engine with 60 HP. The owner indicates the boat has two fuel tanks with total capacity of 74 gallons.

Inside, the boat's personality is decidedly traditional with considerable teak joinery, curved woodwork, generous stowage, and the sort of warm, ship-like atmosphere associated with Taiwanese cruising yachts of the period.
