There are boats you sail for a weekend, and boats you sail for a lifetime. "SURPRISE" a 2019 Catalina 385 was built for the second kind.
At 39'10" on deck with a 13'1" beam, she carries her volume smartly - stable enough to anchor in a rolly bay without complaint, nimble enough to make a passage exciting. The Category A offshore certification isn't a sticker; it's a promise backed by a watertight StrikeZone™ collision bulkhead and SecureSocket™ chainplate system standard from the factory.
On deck, the redesigned backstay opens the cockpit completely - think sundeck at anchor, performance station underway. All lines run aft. All sail controls within reach. The Lewmar #50 and #40 Evo self-tailing winches do the heavy lifting. You just steer and smile.
Down below is where the 385 separates herself from the pack. Catalina's hand-finished teak joinery wraps a layout that's genuinely livable: two private cabins, a full head with shower, a gimbaled stove-and-oven galley, 100 gallons of fresh water, hot water on tap, and enough stowage to disappear for months. The Yanmar 4JH 45 HP diesel is one of the most well-supported engines on the planet - parts everywhere, mechanics who know it cold.
SURPRISE IS BETTER THAN NEW 2019 CATALINA 385 WITH ELECTRIC WINCHES, FULL ELECTRONICS, INVERTER, DODGER, BIMINI, FULL COCKPIT ENCLOSURE, AND MUCH MORE.
Lead keels, long travelers for precise sail control, and lengthy inboard genoa tracks so the sail plan is balanced in all wind conditions are just a few of the many design features that sets the Catalina 385 apart from other yachts.
More unique features include a watertight StrikeZone™ collision bulkhead aft of the anchor locker. A backstay system creates an impressive cockpit for the avid sailor, and Catalina’s unique SecureSocket™ chain plates mast support system affords superior load resolution.
The 385’s moderate beam is carried well aft for a spacious cockpit; modest freeboard reduces windage and a beautiful hand-finished teak interior brings it all home with classic warmth and styling that has been a trademark of Catalina for 41 years.
The Catalina 385 hull is hand-laid fiberglass over a solid laminate structure, with a moderate beam of 13 feet 1 inch carried well aft to deliver a voluminous, stable platform without sacrificing the fine entry and balanced feel that serious sailors demand. Freeboard is kept tastefully moderate, reducing windage at anchor and underway while maintaining the clean, purposeful aesthetic that has defined the new-generation Catalinas.
The deck is laid out for serious sailing with equal regard for comfort. A molded-in diamond-pattern non-skid surface covers all working areas — attractive, effective, and easy to keep clean. Bow hardware includes a polished stainless steel double-anchoring roller and a powerful electric windlass with up-and-down foot switches, simplifying anchoring single-handed or shorthanded. Six shroud chainplates are secured through the deck via Catalina's proprietary SecureSocket™ system, resolving rig loads directly into the hull grid while maintaining full watertight integrity — no leaking deck penetrations, no compromised structural load paths.
Twin 30-inch wide lifeline gates provide easy boarding from both sides. Stainless steel spring cleats are mounted port and starboard. Stern rails incorporate integral observation seats, dual cup holders, and a dedicated bracket for the dinghy outboard — a small detail that speaks to the thoughtfulness of the entire design. A full-length spinnaker bowsprit is available and stows cleanly in the anchor locker when not in use. Full-length stainless steel handrails run port and starboard the length of the cabin top, providing secure handhold underway in all conditions.
- The hull is made of hand-laid fiberglass with a full structural grid and head liner are bonded to the hull. Vinylester resin barrier coat to resist Osomatic blistering.

The hand-finished teak joinery — Catalina's hallmark — is warm, elegant, and executed to a standard well above class expectations. The sole is a textured composite with cedar-lining panel accents. Fixed ports in the main cabin are fitted with privacy screens, allowing natural light and ventilation while maintaining privacy at anchor. Full-length stainless steel handrails run along the overhead port and starboard for secure passage underway.
