Overview

The Zodiac Open 5.5 is a hard bottom deep V center console inflatable rigid inflatable boat (RIB) measuring 17 feet 9 inches in length overall and featuring a beam of 8 feet 4 inches. As the smallest model in Zodiac's Open series, it is designed with modularity in mind, aiming to serve a variety of purposes including fishing, diving, and water sports. This versatile craft is paired with the newly introduced Evinrude E-Tech G2 115 horsepower high output (HO) 3-cylinder two-stroke outboard engine, offering a combination intended to deliver strong performance and efficiency.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The Zodiac Open 5.5 features a molded hard bottom hull with a transom height of 12 inches and includes tow rings on either side of the engine. The transom accommodates a maximum recommended horsepower of 130, with the 115 HO Evinrude engine producing approximately 126 horsepower, close to the boat's maximum rating. A long-shaft (25-inch) version of the engine is required for this setup. The transom includes two round inspection ports and a central engine well access panel. The engine tilts up to 81 degrees, fully raising the lower unit out of the water, and is equipped with tilt switches on the throttle, shift lever, and engine body. Notably, the full tilt position interferes with the rear seatback, which is removable to accommodate this.

Seating and Storage Features

At the stern, the boat has a three-person rear seat with removable wraparound seatbacks that are neatly stitched and supported by holders doubling as rod holders. The center seat cushion sits atop a 54-quart cooler. Grab handles on either side of the rear seat also function as cleats for mooring. Forward of the rear seat is a powder-coated leaning post measuring 34 by 10 inches, which hinges forward to reveal storage beneath and provides grab handles on both ends and across the back. The center console is molded into the deck with an upper portion featuring a forward-hinged door on gas shocks for storage access, and the entire upper console can hinge forward for additional in-deck storage. A powder-coated frame supports a blue-tinted Plexiglas windshield and serves as grab handles. An optional canvas T-top is available.

Console and Helm Station

The helm console is offset to port, creating asymmetrical side decks with a 13-inch clearance on the port side and a narrow, non-passable 3-inch starboard side. The console houses a fixed steering wheel, an Evernote engine gauge, a row of rocker switches, and an Evernote DTS throttle and shift control. Additional features include USB and 12V charger ports, two cupholders, a grab rail, and an ignition switch located below the throttle. The console base offers a two-level angled footrest with a non-skid surface. An arch atop the console supports the windshield and an all-around navigation light. The windshield has minor distortion at its curved corners.

Bow and Deck Amenities

Forward of the console, the foredeck measures 44 inches wide with a non-skid surface and includes a central access hatch. The bow features a molded-in seat 14 inches above the deck, with the hatch serving as the seat base. When opened, the hatch reveals the fuel fill for the integrated 26.4-gallon fuel tank. A drain is located just forward of the fuel fill, which is an unusual placement. Dedicated storage is provided for the anchor and rode, with a bit for tying off the rode, a raised polyester bow davit with a tilting sheave, and an anchor roller. Navigation lights and chocks are mounted on the sides of the bow housing. The freeboard forward is 33 inches, and the cockpit depth amidships is 25 inches from deck to tube top. The inflation tubes feature double handlines running fore and aft for grab handles, and push valves for inflation are located on the port side of the helm base. An optional bow rail is available.

Power and Performance

Powered by the Evinrude E-Tech G2 115 HO outboard, the Zodiac Open 5.5 demonstrated strong performance during testing. The engine is a lightweight 1.9-liter three-cylinder two-stroke producing nearly 126 horsepower, making it the most powerful 115-horsepower outboard on the market. The test boat, with an estimated weight of 2,283 pounds including fuel and two people, achieved a top speed of 46.5 miles per hour at 5,350 RPM using a three-bladed 14.5 by 21-inch propeller. The best economic cruise was recorded at 3,000 RPM and 23.2 miles per hour, with a fuel burn of 3.7 gallons per hour translating to 6.3 miles per gallon and a range of approximately 149 statute miles.

Fuel Efficiency and Acceleration

Fuel consumption at idle and low speeds was notably efficient, with the boat traveling 3.2 miles per hour at 650 RPM and achieving 15.5 miles per gallon, and at 1,000 RPM reaching 4.9 miles per hour with 12.3 miles per gallon. This efficiency is attributed to the inherent advantages of the two-stroke engine design over four-stroke engines. Acceleration tests showed the Zodiac Open 5.5 planing in 3.5 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 10.2 seconds. Testing was conducted in calm conditions with light wind and slight chop, so performance in rougher seas was not evaluated.

Evinrude E-Tech G2 115 HO Engine Features

The Evinrude E-Tech G2 115 HO outboard is a technologically advanced two-stroke engine featuring a three-cylinder powerhead that ignites three times per crankshaft revolution, providing 50% more combustion events than a comparable four-stroke engine. Weighing 390 pounds, it incorporates driver-centric features such as I-trim automatic trim adjustment, digital throttle and shift controls, and touchscreen interface options. The engine is constructed with high-grade aluminum alloy blocks and stainless steel fasteners for corrosion resistance, and it includes large anodes on the lower unit for protection against stray current in marina environments. Evinrude offers a five-year corrosion warranty, which exceeds industry standards in both duration and coverage.

Conclusion

The Zodiac Open 5.5, powered by the new Evinrude E-Tech G2 115 HO outboard, presents a versatile and efficient package suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities. Its modular design, combined with strong performance metrics and fuel efficiency, make it a noteworthy option within the small RIB segment. The integration of the advanced two-stroke Evinrude engine enhances the boat's responsiveness and range, while thoughtful deck and storage features contribute to its functionality. Overall, the Zodiac Open 5.5 upholds the brand's reputation for quality and innovation in the RIB market.
