1968 Willard, hand laid fiberglass. Navy Admirals Barge on USS Ranger. Full galley, aft queen state room w/ head. Any weather.
Introducing a 1968 Willard 40' Double Cabin Trawler - Admiral-Class Heritage Meets Off-Grid Capability.
Experience true nautical heritage aboard this rare 1968 Willard Double Cabin 40' Trawler, originally built as a Navy Admiral's Barge for the USS Ranger. With a solid, hand-laid fiberglass hull and a classic full-displacement trawler design, this vessel blends historical pedigree with serious offshore capability.
Refitted for reliable cruising, she's powered by a Detroit Diesel 6-71 paired with an Allison 2:1 transmission--offering 240 horsepower, economical performance (just 3.5 GPH at 10-12 knots), and fewer than 700 hours on the drivetrain. A 200-amp alternator and a 2500-watt inverter support a robust 110V and 12V system. House power is supplied via four 6V AGM L16 solar batteries charged by dual 120-watt solar panels. Additional Group 31 batteries handle starting and house loads, all tied in with a Perko selector switch.
Onboard amenities include a full galley with microwave, instant hot water heater, and 110V single-burner cooktop. The layout features a forward V-berth and an aft queen stateroom with its own private head. While there's no shower onboard, the system includes two 75-gallon freshwater tanks and dual 10-gallon black tanks, with greywater draining overboard.
Ashore or off-grid, this trawler is self-reliant. There's no generator to maintain--solar handles the essentials. Shore power (110V) is available via the selector switch when docked. For adventure beyond the mothership, she comes with a hard-bottom Achilles dinghy easily deployed using the lifting davit with a Warn winch.
Recently hauled and surveyed (March 2025), she's ready for her next chapter. Whether you're seeking a full-time liveaboard, a long-range cruiser, or a piece of American naval history, this 1968 Willard is a proven performer in any weather. Inquire today for your private showing.
While we will always attempt to provide you with a TRUE representation of every vessel we market, during any purchase from Pop you will be encouraged to schedule an inspection from an independent, accredited surveyor and every purchase WILL ALWAYS BE subject to your satisfaction with the results from your independent survey and your own personal trial run.
We have several more Bayliner, Maxum, Trophy, and Meridian vessels for sale.
