The Trumpy shipbuilding legacy began five generations ago in the coastal city of Burgen, Norway, where Casper Trumpy owned a shipyard. Casper’s son, John, grew up working in the family shipyard and obtained a degree in naval architecture in Berlin, Germany. Upon the death of Casper, John moved to America. John Trumpy, Sr.’s intuitive designs answered the demands of an increasingly wealthy class of Americans. The American yacht market favored fast commuter yachts. Trumpy’s narrow beam and shallow draft design favored speed with no great sacrifice to posh interiors.
John Trumpy built yachts from the 1920s to 1970. Initially in Philadelphia and then moving to Annapolis, Maryland where they built boats under the name John Trumpy and Sons.
Trumpy yachts were known for their high-end craftsmanship. Their sterling reputation had much to do with the high quality of materials, meticulous craftsmanship and the best construction methods of the time. Built primarily from wood, these yachts feature sleek profiles, white hulls and a classic, traditional aesthetic.
During post-World War II years Trumpy yachts between 55 and 80 feet became exceedingly popular with many well-known, well to do Americans. Notable yachts and owners included the presidential yacht USS Sequoia which was the official presidential yacht from the 1930s to 1977. Other notable owners were E.F. Hutton, Howard Hughes, members of the Chrysler, DuPont and Drexel families.
The Windrush was built in the finest of Trumpy traditions, with an oak keel and oak frames, mahogany hull, painted gleaming white (Awlgrip) with varnished mahogany and teak accents, sporting on the bow the traditional gold Trumpy scrolls. Her flush deck design provides excellent visibility while she glides effortlessly through the water.
