DESCRIPTIONS

Hull

The hull is all hand laid fiberglass and epoxy resin. Scantlings about 1" + in turn of bilge to 3/8" at deck joint. The hull has been fully insulated with foam bonded to outer hull with ~1/4" fiberglass bonded to the inside. The insulation runs from the deck level to just below the waterline.

Decks

The decks on Drakus have been completely rebuilt. The aft deck received 2 layers of 1/2" plywood with 2 layers of 1708 fiberglass cloth in epoxy, and then topped with 4 layers of 1708 fiberglass in epoxy resin. The main deck received one layer of 1/2" plywood with 1708 fiberglass and topped with 4 layers of 1708 fiberglass and epoxy. Deck glass wrapped to hull. Coaming and cockpit completely rebuilt. All plywood edges saturated and sealed with epoxy.

Rigging and Sails

Sails are hand made by Port Townsend Sails, Port Townsend WA. They include, Genoa, Drifter, Staysail, Main and Mizzen. Running rigging is color coded. Spars have been stripped and recovered. This includes acid washing, primer, and four coats of Oyster White. All new fittings include stays, turnbuckles, toggles, chainplates, sheaves and winches. Winches are Anderson stainless steel self-tailing. There is one Anderson electric winch mounted on port side cockpit to bring in Jorden Drogue and Genoa. Aloft are SOLAS reflective tapes on top of radar, spreaders, and mast tops.

Stainless Steel, Deck Hardware, and Ground Tackle

Extensive stainless steel work has been done on deck such as higher stanchions with stainless steel top tube, full cage on bowsprit, three gates and two stainless steel folding ladders. Larger stainless steel cleats have also been added. The aft ladder is also a Passerelle with aluminum walkways. The walkways are stowed inside of the two-side mounted solar panels. This ladder is operated by a pair of block and tackle.

The aft arch includes LED lighting, solar panels, dinghy carrier with block and tackle operated by hand crank stainless steel winches port and starboard, which allows the dinghy to ride high under the arch. The stern ladder folds down for dinghy boarding.

There is a BBQ grill and storage for two propane tanks starboard aft, and a seat port aft. The vessel is rigged to put two lines in the water for fishing. Pole sockets midship lead to swing out arms with quick release snaps at the arch.

Three anchors are included: a 40Kg Rocna, and two FX 37s. The aft anchor is provided with a bronze arm on starboard that keeps the chain away from the hull. Chain stowage is inside the aft cabin via chain pipe which drains to engine bilge. The length of the main chain is 150' with 160' of 1 1/2" 8 plait polyester rode with heavy grade thimble spliced on one end. Chain is in a divided locker at the bow. Large stainless steel hooks line the interior of the chain locker for holding line and fenders. Safety rigging is bare stainless wire on top and synthetic lower. There are two deck washdowns, one aft and one forward.

Interior

The interior is finished in the Pacific Northwest style of the period of custom fishing vessels. Portlights are Wilcox-Crittenden bronze 7"x14" and Perko bronze 9". The 5 doors are solid teak with Formica inset. Overhead are white oak laminate beams on 16" centers with white Formica. Other large surfaces are faced with teak veneered marine grade plywood trimmed with solid teak. Drawers and small doors are teak and plywood construction. There is something like 90 to 100 doors and drawers. About 90% of the spaces under the cabin sole are accessible with flush mount ring pulls. The sole boards are epoxy and fiberglass reinforced 1/2" plywood.

Engine/Gear

The main engine is a Perkins 4-236 with approximately 5,000 hours. New high-pressure pump. New style integrated coolant tank/exhaust. Relocated spin-on style oil filter and dipstick for good access. Separate bypass oil filter. Engine pre-lube pump/oil change pump. Electric lift pump. New hoses and AWAB clamps. Uncluttered arrangement. Valve job by Coastal Diesel, New Bern, NC. Head checked for flatness.

Borg Warner Velvet drive remanufactured by Transatlantic Diesel.

New PSI drive coupling, new propeller shaft, additional cutlass bearing (now two), PSI dripless seal with water feed, fuel polisher, 2 Racors and vacuum gauge. Electric pumps for lubrication oil in Perkins and Borg Warner gear. Tank tender for five tanks.

Three 1 1/2" Rule electric bilge pumps.

There are two deck wash downs, one aft and one forward for the anchor chain in port deck box. There is a hot and cold freshwater wash down on the portside.

Electrical System

Four sources to charge batteries:

  1. 640 watts of solar with Morningstar 300-amp MPPT,
  2. 12-volt diesel genset,
  3. 70-amp alternator on the Perkins, and
  4. Magnum battery charger/inverter with isolation transformer for shore power connection.

Option of D400 wind generator system. Main cut-off switch in salon. Exceptions: Bilge pumps, refrigeration, anchor light, battery monitor/data from Magnum as well as Smart Gauge are wired direct.

House battery bank is 1200-amp hour AGMs, and the start battery is AGM as well.

Wiring was replaced to deliver less than 3% voltage drop. Larger circuits are breaker protected; smaller circuits are fused protected. The main breaker board is in the passage between the workbench and engine room. There are two other panels at the navigation station. Wires are finished with crimp connectors and heat shrink tubing. The main wire is 4/0 fused at 350 Amps class T and has master disconnect.

LED lighting

There are LED lights overhead throughout including red LED for night operation and green LED for the bilge. There is LED lighting on spreaders, mizzen, and aft arch. Reading lights in the V-birth, office, saloon, head and aft cabin. Navigation lights and mast head are LED. Topside, deck is lit with 6 individually switched LED fixtures.

Fresh Water

There are three freshwater tanks on board. 160-gallon main tank and two 30-gallon tanks forward. A fully automatic Spectra Catalina water maker is installed and plumbed into the main tank but requires one part to be replaced and membrane replaced.
