Boattest.com Review

Overview

The Sailfish 316 Dual Console is a 32-foot, 6-inch day boat designed with a focus on fishing capabilities while incorporating family-friendly features. With a beam of 9 feet, 9 inches and a draft of 22 inches, this versatile vessel balances performance, comfort, and utility. Our test boat was powered by twin 300 horsepower Mercury Verado outboards, although Yamaha power options are also available.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

The cockpit of the Sailfish 316 is notably wide and deep, offering a spacious 'dance floor' feel. To starboard, it includes a pullout seat, line hangers, a gate to the stern, a fold-out bench seat, a dive door, and a jump seat. All seating is mounted on heavy-duty stainless steel hinges, providing seating capacity for six. To port, a large aft-facing seat conceals dedicated storage for a four-step ladder that clips into place at the hull side door. A pivoting stainless steel grab handle aids boarding, especially when carrying gear. The cockpit deck features innovative drain plates designed to maximize water flow. Additional amenities include a battery monitoring system, shore power plug, insulated fish boxes on both sides, and an inspection plate for fuel tank fittings.

Stern and Swim Platform

The stern area is equipped with multiple rod holders—six across the stern and one in the aft starboard corner—along with a beverage holder, pull-up cleat, pull-up shower, and a live well with a blue-painted, rounded acrylic hatch that is aerated. For water sports enthusiasts, an optional ski tow pylon is available. The swim platform is accessed through a starboard gate and features a stereo remote, stainless steel grab rail, and a freshwater fill located under the ladder hatch. The splash well includes a five-inch deep passageway ahead of the motors, wet storage to port aft, and inspection panels for easy access to wiring and hydraulic lines. The outboard wiring is protected by flexible conduit.

Helm and Cockpit Amenities

Behind the helm seat, an optional bar includes an Isotherm refrigerator, sink with fold-up faucet, wine rack, counter space, two stainless steel beverage holders, and three storage drawers. Between the helm and companion seats, a large in-deck locker opens on stainless steel struts with a rubber gasket for noise reduction. Additional storage is found under the companion seat in a pull-out drawer and inside the helm console, which houses the stereo amplifier, pop-out circuit breakers, and helm rigging access.

Bow Area and Safety Features

The bow features an air dam that closes off the walkway and a full-height windshield with a sliding center section for ventilation. The bow's depth is a notable safety feature, allowing a seated person to reach the rail comfortably, complemented by a fold-down armrest on the inboard side. Storage includes an insulated cooler with drainage to port, a locker under the forward cushion, a bucket storage area to starboard, and a dedicated table rack for positioning the table in the bow or stern. Additional in-floor storage is sealed with gaskets and pneumatic struts, and stainless steel beverage holders, USB ports, and stereo speakers are integrated forward. The optional pull-up shower, two pull-up cleats, and a ProFish windlass with road access on each side enhance functionality. Structural reinforcements include Kevlar around the bow eyes and carbon fiber in hardtop corners to reduce cracking and increase stiffness.

Helm Station and Controls

The helm comes standard with a 5-inch Mercury Vessel View screen and switches for docking, spreader, and overhead lights. The main helm station features a tilt steering wheel aligned with a compass and is upgraded with twin Garmin 12-inch screens. Accessory switches flank the screens, with Fusion stereo controls to the left and Garmin VHF radio below. To the right are the Ultraflex power steering control, windlass, searchlight, and the latest Mercury digital throttle and shift controls. Trim tabs are easily operated, allowing the captain to maintain control with one hand on the wheel. The helm seat is ergonomically designed with diamond-stitched upholstery, a fold-out bolster, two folding armrests, and electric aft adjustment. An angled footrest with a non-skid finish adds comfort.

Companion Seating and Head Compartment

Opposite the helm, the companion seat offers a 'one and a half' size with stainless steel hitch assembly, premium upholstery, two folding armrests, and a bolster that folds up and forward. It includes two USB ports, a stainless steel cup holder, and a locking glove box. Forward of the companion seat, a window admits light into the private head compartment located in the port console. The head features a sink with a solid surface countertop, storage below, and toilet controls positioned around the front. The sole is finished with synthetic non-skid teak for traction and easy cleaning. The head door is lockable, and ventilation is provided in the walkway. Overhead storage for life jackets is integrated beneath the hardtop.

Hardtop and Structural Details

The hardtop provides 82 inches of headroom and features a robust, powder-coated support structure that doubles as grab handles. The underside can be optionally painted to match the hull sides. The design emphasizes durability and longevity in saltwater environments, with attention to detail evident in the use of stainless steel gas struts on hatches to prevent slamming.

Performance and Handling

The test boat, weighing 8,100 pounds without engines and an as-tested weight of 11,478 pounds including four people, fuel, water, and gear, achieved a top speed of 50.2 miles per hour at 5,950 RPM. The most efficient cruise speed was 23.9 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, consuming 15.8 gallons per hour, which equates to 1.5 miles per gallon and a range of 362 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was strong, with planing achieved in 5 seconds, 20 miles per hour reached in 5.8 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 8.8 seconds. The boat trims positively at about 15 degrees and delivers a stable, solid, and comfortable ride. Maneuverability is excellent, with clean banking turns at 45 miles per hour and no prop cavitation. The hull features the sixth generation of a variable degree stepped bottom, beginning at 24 degrees at the V, flaring to 23 degrees, and flattening to 22 degrees at the chines, which enhances rough water performance. The boat handled four to six-foot seas with occasional eight-foot holes confidently, making it well suited for both fishing and family cruising.

Conclusion

The Sailfish 316 Dual Console successfully combines fishing amenities with family-friendly features in a well-engineered, versatile day boat. Its spacious cockpit, thoughtfully designed helm and companion seating, ample storage, and robust construction contribute to a comfortable and practical boating experience. Powered by twin 300 horsepower outboards, it delivers strong performance and confident handling in a variety of conditions. Overall, the 316 Dual Console offers a balanced package for anglers and recreational boaters alike.
