Pursuit DC 265 Review
The 265 is a great boat for fishing a half-day offshore; then come in and play/cruise for the rest of the day.
By Dean Travis Clarke
Updated: November 16, 2010

Everything in life today seems like a blend or compromise. Such is the case with Pursuit’s newest model, the DC 265.

Pursuit – the Slikkers family’s line of dedicated fishing boats – wanted to offer families the ability to fish hard and even travel a bit far afield, but also allow them to engage in other water sports as well. Hence, the 26foot dual console.

A friend of mine just took his three children and wife to Bimini, Bahamas, from Fort Pierce, Florida, for a weekend on this boat. They fished, snorkeled and had a great time. And yes, they made it home across the great Gulf Stream perfectly safely.

Performance The 265 gets up on plane virtually instantly and feels like it’s riding high – akin to riding in an SUV or pickup rather than a sedan.

The boat scoffed at the wind-against-tide conditions in the Fort Pierce Inlet, which produced two- to threefoot rollers. At prudent speed, it transited the inlet comfortably while keeping the passengers dry. The optional power-assist steering made quick adjustments a breeze.

Riding the smoother troughs offshore, the 265, with a single Yamaha 350, topped out at 49.6 mph, turning 6,000 rpm and burning 34.3 gph. Best cruise comes in around 26.9 mph (3,500 rpm) while using 11.2 gph for efficiency on the order of 2.37 mpg. That’s a range of 320 miles, figuring 90 percent fuel capacity.

Drifting beam-to the seas, the 265 showed a moderate roll moment but with pretty rapid transitions. Down-sea, the boat tracked perfectly with no hands on the wheel. With the wind at just the right angle and speed, you get a slight bit of torque heel. Cancel it instantly with tab adjustment.

Interestingly, with the enclosure and hardtop, I felt equally comfortable driving seated or standing – a rare quality among dual consoles!

The standard-equipment list cites one rod holder in each gunwale and two more under the starboard gunwale, the latter accommodating short, stand-up rods only. Those choosing the hardtop can mount holders along the trailing edge. In the transom, a fish box on centerline abuts a sky-blue baitwell outboard to port.

Bottom fishermen will appreciate the large anchor locker in the bow with a through-stem anchor, a roller and windlass. If you prefer manual deployment, the anchor hatch has a notch for the line, so you needn’t leave it open while on the hook. Though anglers need to negotiate the helm seat/module and passenger seating, the cockpit does have bolsters and a foldaway transom seat, making the fighting arena very functional.

Design and Construction Pursuit offers numerous innovations that make boating and fishing easier. I love that you needn’t unsnap any cushions to access the under-seat storage. That also means your cushions won’t fly overboard while under way. Also, all storage boxes drain overboard rather than into the bilge.

For passengers seated forward, Pursuit supplies seatbacks on the aft bulwark as well as bolsters along the gunwale and low-profile rail. In colder or inclement weather, the single-piece door and fold-open windshield close off the forward seating area from the helm and cockpit.

Moving aft, you’ll find the obligatory dual-console head to port with a larger-than-average access door, molded sink and toilet, and a large storage compartment opposite in the helm. A shower by the transom door rinses the salt off after a swim.

The center of the aft-facing companion seat has a cushion with an interesting hinge mechanism that lets you lift it up, exposing an insulated drink box. And in addition to the foldaway transom seat, Pursuit provides an innovative foldaway seat that makes the companion seat into a sunpad/chaise arrangement in the port bulwark.

I’d expect most buyers to opt for the hardtop with its additional rod holders, other fishing accoutrements and enclosure. A tall 360degree nav light fits into a receptacle on the starboard gunwale – right by the transom door. If someone loses his balance and grabs it while cruising at night, well, you get the idea. If you get the hardtop, the light is permanently affixed to its topside. Besides that, the hardtop also serves as a perfect mounting platform for your outriggers.

Pursuit builds the 265 using resin infusion to optimize the resin-to-fiberglass ratio as well as to eliminate any possible voids in the laminate. It makes for a lighter, stronger hull. Even the innovative windshield has a resin-infused frame! The DC 265 represents a dual-console fishing boat that even a serious angler can be proud to run.

tradaboat Review
Pursuit Boats is based in Port Pierce, Florida, and maintains that its products are constructed with the highest standards of design and material quality. Producing 350 to 400 boats a year, Pursuit Boats specialises in midrange fishing boat models ranging from 25 to 40ft (7.6 to 12.2m). The dual console Pursuit DC 265 therefore sits in the middle of the fleet. With a beam of 2.67m and a fuelled weight more than 3500kg it’s essentially a drystack or moored option except for those brave souls with a monster truck and a wide load permit.
Pursuit Boats

Construction on the Pursuit DC 265 is from handlaid vinylester resin with heavy layup over the keel and a unified grid of stringers and crossbeams infused to the hull for strength and rigidity. In a hint to the boat’s build quality, all marine wiring is tinned copper in a purpose-built harness and electrical components are connected to the harness with waterproof plugged electrical connections.

A custom aluminum trailer is available for the task and, I must say, it was a pretty awesome sight on the short run from the yard to the launch ramp. Looking up at the bow with the boat still on the trailer, generous arcs of flare and liberal servings of reverse chine are on show along each side.

Dual console
Looking through the spec sheet leaves the indelible impression that this is a serious fishing boat – with giant killtank, rocket launchers, plumbed bait tank and, although not shown in the photos, even Rupp Revolution Top Gun aluminum outriggers. But as soon as you board there’s a level of fit and comfort that belies its predatory nature.

To explain the dual console classification, the passenger and driver each have impeccably moulded consoles ahead of them, leaving a central walkthrough to a roomy bow where deeply padded lounges echo the soft feel under the bum of the transom and side lounges in the cockpit.

Adding to the comfort of the crew is a sink and shower with freshwater, a decent-sized head and that hardtop to keep the sun at bay.

Despite all the fishing oriented inclusions, Pursuit describes the DC 265 as its family fun and casual fishing model, so it fits the crossover style and would be equally at home entertaining guests as pulling big fish over the side. To be honest, though, I wouldn’t like to drag smelly fish across those carefully finished lounges even with clip-on canvas covers in place to offer some protection.

Layout
A Delta Fast-Set plough anchor is recessed neatly below the bow of the Pursuit DC 265, so with a Lewmar winch under a wide hatch it leaves the forepeak as a large, flat and non-skid boarding step.

Each bow lounger lifts back on sturdy piano hinges to reveal large, drained storage hatches either side – I liked the way their friction stops allow them to stay open when loading them up. Occupants get grabhandles, cupholders and a set of speakers from a Clarion sound system with the head unit in the passenger glove box.

A lounge at the transom leaves space to starboard for a walkway and both it and a portside lounge fold out of the way for fishing, leaving plenty of room to move around freely in the cockpit, although I imagine a bias for fishing on the starboard side. Not only is it completely uncluttered, it makes more sense to be playing big fish where the skipper can keep an eye on the action.

Padded coamings around the cockpit support the angling bias of the boat and there are rod racks along the starboard side, rod and cup holders on the sidedecks and a four-slot rocket launcher built into the hardtop.

The transom is all serious fishing too. To port is a plumbed 72lt livebait tank lined in blue, while a 117lt fishbox with macerator sits centre stage with another metre-long storage box in the floor to handle a bigger catch. A fresh and raw water washdown will keep the deck clean, with most of the muck draining overboard through the corner scuppers of the self-draining deck.

Helm
A tall, toughened glass Taylor Made windscreen wraps around the helm and combines with clears connected to the hardtop to enclose the helm to the front and sides. It makes a roomy space that’s well protected from the elements and at 2m high has ample headroom. Vision all around is excellent and panels of clears are easily removed for unlimited fresh air.

A single moulding to starboard supports back-to-back seating and a central section that includes a brace for the hardtop and a couple of cupholders. The fixed-position co-pilot’s chair sits atop a pair of slide-out storage drawers and the rear-facing seat is great for keeping an eye on lures or watertoys and opens to a large icebox.

Ahead of the co-pilot, a side-opening door leads down to the head where an electric toilet is connected to a holding tank with macerator. It is easy to access and I found adequate room to move and a moulded sink with freshwater.

The helm chair is a comfortable bucket style with bolster on a sturdy pedestal. There is good height adjustment and moulded footrests are well placed to offer support when driving. Behind the helm seat is a moulded bait (or food) preparation table with a sink and removable cutting board. It’s a great addition and crew will appreciate the ability to keep hands clean when handling bait and fish.

Handling and ride
On the run from Toronto to the seaway at Swansea we were able to give the 350hp Verado outboard motor full rein across the flat waters of Lake Macquarie. We had the hull planing at a very efficient 9kts, with impressive acceleration out of the hole and a brisk top speed of 45kts.

Handling in calm water was lively and fun for a boat of its size and showed no sign of cavitation in hard turns.

Once across the bar the Pursuit DC 265 made easy work of the short 1m chop and a low swell. The ride was soft and, even when getting most of the hull out of the water, it landed with no fuss or banging. Coming back through the bar the boat felt safe and competent in the following sea, with ample power to drive through waves without any tendency to broach.

Price
Lifestyle Marine order their stock boats with the factory options they consider most buyers would want, so the local package includes the aft folding seats, electric winch, electric toilet and tank, hardtop, outriggers and plumbed live tank. So, for a $216,000 price as tested, you only need to add your choice of marine electronics and a trailer ($15,000) if needed. Hard core anglers might think it a touch too refined, but for those who like some comforts its versatile design will fulfil many different roles without compromising too much on fishing.

The Trade-a-Boat verdict

With the DC 265, Pursuit has certainly taken a different path in delivering a fun all-rounder in a useful fishing platform. Its design recognises that a boat can have more than one intention and the comfortable bow seating will go a long way to supporting recreational activities for the whole family. At the same time it’s a well-engineered and very capable sea boat with a big range and inherent safety for heading offshore.

Pursuit DC 265: A Dual-Console Home Run
A legendary fishing boat builder adds sport and utility to its lineup.

By Gary Reich, April 16, 2014
A good way to think of today’s dual-console boats, such as the Pursuit DC265, is as SUVs of the sea. When you need good old-fashioned rugged fishing performance and the ability to get dirty, a dual-console boat has the legs, layout, and utility finish to get it done. And, when you need seating for eight and a pleasant ride, there’s comfy, convertible, fold-down seating that can easily be used up forward by non-angling family and friends while frenetic fishing action goes on at the stern.

Good looks, great performance, and room for both fun and fishing make the DC 265 a great sport utility boat. Photo courtesy of Pursuit.

It’s this ability to play both sides of the fishing and relaxation coin that has helped dual-console boats capture an ever-increasing share of the boating market in the last five years. The Pursuit DC 265 is an example of a well-known boat builder pulling off the design with great results. If you know Pursuit, you know that it has always been a fishing-dedicated brand. The introduction of two dual-console models to its stable should tell you something about the popularity of these boats.

A glance at the DC 265 reveals classic Pursuit DNA: rugged sharp lines, an aggressive forward stance, but with a graceful bow and enough flare to keep things dry. Pursuits tend to be angular (check out the way the sheer line dramatically falls away at the stern) yet elegant at the same time, and the DC 265 is no exception. A hard top ($9600) is an expensive but worthwhile (and good-looking) addition if you want not just sun and weather protection, but also a place to stow fishing tackle or watersports gear.

The DC265 is built in Fort Pierce, FL. Every DC 265’s hull and deck are hand-laid using vinylester resin and engineered fabrics, such as biaxial knits with matt backings. Integral foam-filled stringers form a rigid, one-piece hull form, and closed-cell foam is used throughout the deck and transom for lightness and rigidity. Pursuit does not use any wood in the DC 265’s construction, which is the way it should be on a 26-foot boat of this class that pushes just north of the $100,000 mark. Pursuit is especially proud of the DC 265’s windshield enclosure, which instead of being crafted of welded, powder-coated aluminum like you’ll find on most dual-console boats, is made of composite materials instead. That windshield also has a lot of height, which is good news when the weather gets snotty and it’s time to run home.

Comfortable forward seating, a cleverly concealed head compartment, and a well-protected helm area make up the forward half of the DC 265.

Onboard, the Pursuit DC 265 is essentially divided into three general areas: the bow, the helm area, and the aft cockpit. Up forward you’ll find two vinyl benches that can either be used as forward-facing chaise lounges, or inward-facing bench seats. They’re extremely comfortable, and each hinges up for easy access to stowage underneath. There are vinyl bolsters around the entire seating area, which adds to the comfort factor.

Back behind the tall and expansive curved windshield is a high bench seat to port, which is situated in front of a large, hinging door that gives access to the simple head and sink area. To starboard is the helm with a captain's chair behind it. There’s room on the helm console for a small multi-function display, VHF radio, and another small electronics item such as an autopilot head unit or stand-alone depthsounder, and Pursuit has thoughtfully colored the entire helm console gray to reduce glare.

The DC 265 has one of the nicest (and most clever) aft cockpit seating arrangements we’ve seen in a dual-console boat.

Where many dual-console boats fall down is in the way the aft cockpit is designed—there’s either not enough seating, or the seating that’s there is inadequate. This is where Pursuit hits a home run. Stored flush against the transom and the port gunwale are two sturdy fold-down seats that add seating for at least four people. They’re there when you need them (think partying and lounging), and out of the way when you don’t (think being hooked up with a big fish).

And while many fold-down seats installed on boats look and feel like a compromise in sturdiness, the hardware Pursuit uses in the DC 265’s seats is impressive. Each comfy, vinyl-upholstered bench is mounted on a thick slab of powder-coated aluminum, which is attached to the deck using beefy, polished stainless hinging hardware. A nice detail is that the backrest for the aft bench raises and lowers with the opening and closing of the seat, serving as a backrest when open, and a cockpit bolster when it’s closed. It’s all clever and very well conceived. OK, as you can probably tell by the amount of time I just spent telling you about the DC 265’s cockpit seating, I like it a lot. I think you will, too.

In the power department, you can slap twin 200-horsepower outboards on the back of the DC 265 if you want to, but unless you’re looking for dual-engine reliability offshore, I’d advise against it. Why? The transom is another area on this boat where Pursuit has thought about what they’re doing. Instead of making the outboard well dominate the swim platform, Pursuit has set it back far enough that folks can actually walk the entire length of the platform without doing gymnastics over the engine. This also means there’s room for a full-width transom door. With the twin-outboard option, that space closes in much tighter. If wakeboarding or waterskiing are on your activities list (or any activity which requires lots of water access), the single-engine option is the way to go.

Here’s the other rub: The twin Yamaha F200s only get you an additional two mph of top-end with virtually the same fuel efficiency (2.57 mpg) as the F350 (2.56) at cruise speed (around 27 mph). Standard power is Yamaha’s tried-and-true F300 six-cylinder outboard, which pushes the DC 265 to 44.3 mph at wide-open throttle. You’ll find a lean cruising speed at around 29 mph, where the F300 gets 2.35 mpg. With 139 gallons of fuel on board and a 15-percent reserve, that gives you a solid range of around 278 miles. Twin Yamaha F150s round out factory power plant options on the DC265.

It’s obvious that I wouldn’t require much selling when it comes to the Pursuit DC 265—it’s one of the most clever dual-console designs I’ve come across. Chances are you’ll be sold, too, when you take one for a spin.

Other choices you might want to consider in this segment of boats include the Edgewater 280CX, and the Grady-White Freedom 285. If you're looking for a smaller, yet capable, dual-console, check out the Boston Whaler 230 Vantage.
