Owner's Comments

I’ve been sailing since I was a kid, learning in my yacht club’s junior sailing program and spending summers aboard our family boat. After a long break from sailing, I began thinking seriously about my eventual goal of living aboard a sailboat in retirement and cruising the Caribbean and beyond. About eight years ago, I decided it was time to get back on the water and find a boat of my own. I had raced on larger boats, but wanted something dependable, well-mannered, and cared for. When I found this Pearson 303, it stood out immediately. The teak was in excellent condition, which told me the previous owner took pride in maintaining her. That attention to care mattered to me, so I bought her and named her Bloody Mary.

Since then, I’ve steadily upgraded and improved her every year, sometimes storing her indoors to properly varnish brightwork, re-bed lifeline stanchions, and address deck hardware the right way. As reflected in the listing, there’s very little left to do—she’s a sturdy, dependable boat that has earned my full confidence. Every summer I’ve taken my kids (now adults) on two-week cruises around Lake Michigan, and we’ve always felt safe aboard her. I sail singlehanded often, and she’s exceptionally well set up for it with all lines led back to the cockpit. At the same time, I regularly race Wednesday night Beercan races and other casual events with crew aboard, all of whom appreciate her straightforward systems, forgiving manners, and how easy she is to sail well. A newer set of sails has only improved her performance and results.

Last summer I prepared for the solo Mackinac race by competing in the solo Lake Michigan Scramble, a 100-mile race. The overnight leg was close-hauled into 20+ knots with 2–4 foot seas. After getting soaked on deck, I trusted the autopilot, went below, and took short naps—coming up only to make heading adjustments and check traffic. Bloody Mary took care of me all night. We passed another Pearson 303 and a Nonsuch and finished third overall behind two larger racing boats. I’ve now got the itch to campaign something more competitive, so as much as it pains me, I’ve decided to let her go. She’s been as good to me as I’ve been to her, and I’ll miss her—but I hope her next owner enjoys and cares for her the same way.

Broker's Comments

Please note: Bloody Mary sheltered under a custom canvas cover the last six winters. This winter cover was removed mid-January to allow for safer boarding.  Also, engine hours are estimated.
