Overview

The O'Day 28 is an American sailboat, that was designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates and first built in 1978.

The design was built by O'Day Corp. (owned by Bangor Punta and later Lear Siegler) in the United States between 1978 and 1986, but it is now out of production. A total of 507 examples were completed.

The O'Day 28 is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a slightly reverse transom, an internally-mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed fin keel or centerboard. It displaces 7,300 lb (3,311 kg) and carries 2,550 lb (1,157 kg) of ballast. Starting with serial number 323, produced in 1980, the boats displace 7,450 lb (3,379 kg) and have a slightly shorter waterline length.[1] [3]

The keel-equipped version of the boat has a draft of 4.50 ft (1.37 m), while the centerboard-equipped version has a draft of 6.83 ft (2.08 m) with the centerboard extended and 3.25 ft (0.99 m) with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer. In later production the centerboard version was replaced by a shoal draft keel model with a draft of 3.67 ft (1.12 m). A deep keel version was also produced with a draft of 4.67 ft (1.42 m). There was also a tall mast version, with a mast about 2.00 ft (0.61 m) higher.[1] [3]

The fuel tank holds 18 U.S. gallons (68 L; 15 imp gal) and the fresh water tank has a capacity of 25 U.S. gallons (95 L; 21 imp gal).[1] [3]

The design has a hull speed of 6.42 kn (11.89 km/h). Serial numbers starting with 323 have a hull speed of 6.39 kn (11.83 km/h).
