Construction, accommodations and layout.

The Newport 28 is constructed with a solid fiberglass laminate hull and cored composite deck and cabin structures. Deck and hull are joined on an flange with fasteners through an aluminium toe rail. In using a single piece fiberglass internal liner Newport 28s were fabricated in much the same way as modern production boats. Asilomar is a Mk II and has a fin keel.

The classic interior arrangements have a V berth forward (with overhead hatch), with an enclosed Jabsco head to port. There is a hanging locker and cabinets to starboard. Main saloon has settees port and starboard with shelves and stowage outboard. There is a centerline fold down table. Galley is to starboard with stainless steel sink, cabinets, Kenyon stove and ice box. A quarter berth is on the port side. The sole is teak and holly. New cushions 2024. Head room is 6'1" centerline main saloon. Four port lights and an overhead hatch for ambient light and ventilation. The companionway leads up to a spacious cockpit, that has a locker to starboard. There is s steering pedestal with Edson wheel. Wide decks with chain plates well inboard that gives easy forward passage and good sheeting angles.
