"Steadfast" is a 1987 Mason 33 (#23), a timeless bluewater cruiser that beautifully embodies the renowned craftsmanship of Mason Yachts. Designed by Al Mason and built by Ta Shing Yacht Builders, this vessel combines classic elegance, robust construction, and exceptional offshore capability. With her graceful lines, full keel, and cutter rig, Steadfast is the ideal yacht for the sailor who appreciates traditional design paired with modern upgrades.
Lovingly maintained and thoughtfully refitted in 2018 in Mobile, Alabama, Steadfast was prepared for extended cruising by her current owners. She has enjoyed mostly weekend and coastal sailing out of Jacksonville, Florida, with occasional offshore trips. Her Yanmar 3GM30F diesel engine has approximately 1,530 hours and has been meticulously maintained for reliable operation.
Refit
The 2018 refit was extensive and addressed nearly every major system aboard. Highlights include a full set of new sails-main, staysail, genoa, and storm trysail-crafted by Shurr Sails in Pensacola, Florida. An asymmetric spinnaker in excellent condition with a carbon fiber whisker pole rounds out her sail inventory. All standing and running rigging were replaced, ensuring years of dependable performance under sail.
Steadfast also received a complete electronics and navigation upgrade with a Furuno suite that includes a DRS4D-NXT 24" 25W Solid-State Radar, Furuno Ultrasonic Weather Station 200WX, NavNet TZ Touch MFD, and three F170 multifunction displays. A 5-watt AIS Transponder Class B enhances safety and situational awareness while underway.
Her electrical and comfort systems were modernized as well, featuring a 600-amp hour Relion Lithium battery bank paired with a new high-output alternator. The galley and cabin systems were updated with upgraded refrigeration and a 5000 BTU air conditioning system-ideal for comfort in warmer climates. New interior upholstery was completed in 2020, keeping her interior fresh and inviting.
Surveys well
The current owner has kept Steadfast well-documented and in excellent working order. Surveys from 2007, 2014, and 2018 show a history of consistent care, with all noted findings addressed after each inspection. A comprehensive inventory of spare parts is included, such as an alternator, starter, water pump, filters, belts, and more-ideal for the cruiser or liveaboard sailor who values preparedness.
A few minor cosmetic items remain: she is due for bottom paint, there is a small teak water stain from a previously rebedded portlight, and the teak decks are showing wear. The owner has been carefully maintaining the decks by replacing screws and bungs as needed.
Where is she now?
Currently berthed at Epping Forest Yacht and Country Club Marina in Jacksonville, Florida, Steadfast is fully functional and ready to sail or deliver anywhere.
For sailors seeking a classic bluewater yacht that blends the beauty of traditional design with modern cruising upgrades, the 1987 Mason 33 Steadfast represents an exceptional opportunity. Strong, seaworthy, and elegantly appointed, she's ready for her next adventure-whether that's coastal cruising, island hopping, or finally fulfilling those long-distance dreams.
