The Biggest Pros and Cons
The 1986 Kadey-Krogen 36 Manatee is a classic trawler known for its solid construction and comfortable liveaboard qualities. Here are some pros and cons of this model:
Pros
Sturdy Build: Known for its rugged, full-displacement hull, the Kadey-Krogen 36 offers excellent stability and seaworthiness, making it suitable for extended cruising.
Efficient Fuel Consumption: The full-displacement hull design allows for efficient fuel use at moderate speeds, enhancing range and economy.
Spacious Interior: Despite its 36-foot length, the Manatee features a well-laid-out interior with comfortable living spaces, including a full galley, salon, and sleeping accommodations.
Classic Trawler Style: The design emphasizes comfort and practicality over speed, appealing to those who appreciate traditional trawler aesthetics.
Good Storage: Ample storage compartments make it ideal for longer voyages or liveaboard use.
Reliable Systems: Many owners find the mechanical and electrical systems straightforward and dependable with proper maintenance.
Cons
Slower Speeds: The full-displacement hull means the Kadey-Krogen 36 Manatee is not fast, typically cruising at around 7-8 knots, which may not suit those seeking higher speeds.
Older Design Features: Being a 1986 model, some interior finishes and systems may feel dated compared to newer boats unless updated.
Maintenance Requirements: As with any older vessel, ongoing maintenance and occasional upgrades are necessary to keep systems running smoothly.
Limited Maneuverability: The boat’s size and hull shape can make tight docking or maneuvering in confined spaces more challenging without experience.
Higher Initial Cost: While smaller than some vessels, the Kadey-Krogen brand often commands a premium price due to build quality and reputation.
