The 42.5 utilizes a fractional sloop rig.  The mast is deck-stepped, this design facilitates easier installation and maintenance. However, it requires a robust compression post within the boat to support the mast's load.  The  mast and boom are constructed from aluminum, and the standing rigging (the cables that support the mast) is made of stainless steel.  The mast includes two sets of swept spreaders, which help to support the mast and maintain its shape.

The hull is built with solid GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) and features Kevlar reinforcements in critical areas. Jeanneau utilizes a structural grid, hand-laminated to the hull, for increased rigidity and to minimize hull flexing.
