2005 Cruising World Boat of the Year
Hunter Marine had a reputation as a builder of boats for sailors who favor creature comforts over performance. The hiring of Glenn Henderson as chief designer and engineer demonstrates Hunter's ever increasing attention to better performance. Henderson carved his reputation as a performance-oriented designer whose creations have fared well on the racecourse. The 38 has the newly designed low-drag keel and a large rudder that helps generate lift improving pointing. Henderson said: "Our goal was to design a boat that was an exceptionally comfortable cruiser, yet offered outstanding performance and easy handling."  The new 38 has met expectations and was awarded Cruising World's 2005 Boat of the Year under 40 feet. The hull is balsa-cored sandwich above the waterline and solid glass with Kevlar reinforcements below. The deck incorporates high quality components. A Selden B & R double spreader mast, in mast mainsail furling, stainless steel arch to support the Harken traveler system which puts mainsail controls near the helm while safely out of the cockpit. The Genoa sheets are led port and starboard to the Lewmar 40 self tailing primary winches led through Lewmar ball bearing blocks allowing the skipper to trim from the wheel. The cabin-top winches are Lewmar 40s married to Spinlock XTS rope clutches. Whitlock Direct Drive steering is robust and reliable with great feedback.

The counter tops are Corian. The shelving, cabinets and draws make this a very functional layout.
