Owner's Comments

Owner's Comments 12/2025:

Sailboat Sales sold Ambitious brand new to her first owners in 1978. They were very conscientious, maintenance focused and sailed off a mooring in Monroe St Harbor, mostly daysailing but some cruising too.

The next owners, from 1983 to 2021, also sailed out of Monroe Street, also extremely maintenance focused, mostly daysailing with some short range cruising.  The decks, topsides, bottom and belowdecks have all been kept in very good condition.

She’s a very dry, well-found boat ready to provide her next owners with much on the water happiness. Presently in storage, shrink wrapped with zipper door access.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1978 Hunter 30 is a classic cruising sailboat known for its solid construction and comfortable accommodations. Here are some of the pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Spacious Interior: For a 30-foot boat, the Hunter 30 offers a roomy cabin with a well-designed layout, making it comfortable for extended cruising.

Good Sailing Performance: It has a balanced sail plan and a moderate displacement, providing stable and responsive handling in a variety of conditions.

Sturdy Build: Constructed with quality fiberglass, the Hunter 30 is known for its durability and longevity.

Affordable Maintenance: Compared to newer models, maintenance and repairs tend to be more affordable due to the availability of parts and simpler systems.

Versatile Design: Suitable for both coastal cruising and club racing, offering flexibility for different types of sailors.

Cons

Older Design Features: Being a boat from the late 1970s, some design elements and onboard systems may feel dated compared to modern sailboats.

Limited Headroom: While spacious, the cabin headroom may be lower than more contemporary 30-foot cruisers, which can affect comfort for taller individuals.

Engine and Equipment Aging: Original engines and equipment may require updating or replacement to ensure reliability and efficiency.

Sail Inventory: The standard sail inventory might be limited, potentially necessitating investment in additional sails for better performance or versatility.

Resale Value: As a vintage model, the Hunter 30 may have a lower resale value compared to newer boats, though this can be a pro or con depending on the buyer’s perspective.

Made For

The 1978 Hunter 30 is ideal for sailing enthusiasts seeking a versatile and comfortable cruiser. Its design suits small families, couples, or solo sailors who want a reliable boat for coastal cruising, weekend getaways, or club racing. With ample cabin space and user-friendly handling, it appeals to both novice sailors and experienced boaters looking for an affordable, classic sailboat that balances performance and comfort.
