General Information

The Hunter 290 has a large Edson steering wheel with rack & pinion steering, composite rudder with steel shaft, and two self-tailing cabin-top winches. The roller furling genoa and roller furling in-mast Selden mainsail make for easy single handed sailing. Draft is a 4’5” winged lead keel. The B & R fractional rig with its swept-back spreaders eliminates the need for a backstay. All running rigging is led aft to the cockpit to make things easier for a shorthanded crew. Going forward, the nonskid side decks are easy to maneuver due to the innovative rig. The teak safety grab handles have all been replaced with stainless steel so no need to refinish them ever again.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 2000 Hunter 290 is a popular cruising sailboat known for its comfortable design and user-friendly features. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Spacious Interior: The Hunter 290 offers a roomy cabin layout with ample headroom, making it comfortable for extended cruising and overnight stays.

Easy Handling: Equipped with a well-designed sail plan and in-mast furling options, the boat is manageable for short-handed sailing.

Good Performance: With a moderate displacement and a balanced sail area, the Hunter 290 delivers respectable sailing performance in various wind conditions.

Generous Storage: The boat includes plenty of storage compartments, which is convenient for cruising gear and provisions.

Modern Amenities: Features such as a functional galley, enclosed head, and comfortable seating enhance onboard livability.

Cons

Build Quality: Some owners note that the construction materials and finishes may not be as robust or high-end as those found on more expensive models.

Limited Upwind Performance: While adequate for cruising, the Hunter 290 may not excel in upwind sailing compared to some performance-oriented designs.

Engine Power: The standard engine may be underpowered for heavy weather or strong currents, potentially requiring an upgrade for more confident motoring.

In-Mast Furling Drawbacks: Although convenient, the in-mast furling system can sometimes reduce sail shape efficiency and may require additional maintenance.

Resale Value: As a production cruiser, the Hunter 290 might depreciate faster than custom or semi-custom yachts.
