Overview

2004 Hunter 33 – Perfect for the Confident Cruiser Who Knows What They Want (Disclaimer: cute little dog NOT included)

Some boats are for dreamers. This one’s for doers.

If you’re the type who values comfort and capability, who wants to sail without fuss but without compromise — the Santa Cruz might just be your match. This is a boat for sailors who love slipping the lines on a Friday afternoon, making a sunset anchorage in time for cocktails, and waking up with coffee and a breeze ready to go.

This Hunter 33 is ideal for:

  • Weekend adventurers and coastal cruisers who want space, ease of handling, and a solid performance profile.
  • Couples or young families looking for a dependable, well-laid-out boat to grow into — with two private cabins, a roomy saloon, and enough galley space to cook a real meal.
  • Experienced sailors downsizing from larger boats who want something more manageable but still want the amenities: wheel steering, furling main and jib, and a full electronics suite.
  • New sailors ready to move up from a day sailor into something truly livable and bluewater-capable (in the right hands and conditions, of course).

Santa Cruz hits a sweet spot: not too big to overwhelm, not too small to feel limited. It’s nimble under sail, stable underfoot, and surprisingly roomy thanks to Hunter’s beamy design and clever use of space. The arch-mounted traveler, walk-through transom, and easy access lines make for a boat that’s friendly to solo or short-handed sailing.

Whether your vision is weekending around the Bay, cruising down to the Carolinas, or just spending more time at anchor than at the dock — Santa Cruz makes it easy to say yes.

Let’s get you aboard. She’s ready when you are.

**A message from Santa Cruz' current owner **

"I bought Santa Cruz 10 years ago and have used it to sail on the Bay and as a live aboard in DC at the Capital Yacht Club. Two years ago, I moved to Houston and last year decided to put it up for sale because I will not be back to DC in the near future. Since purchasing the boat, I have replaced all of the sails, the dodger and the bimini. Also bought and installed a new bigger anchor. No collisions or damage under my ownership. Weathered a big storm/microburst and the boat did just fine."

Pros

Stability and Performance: The Hunter 26 features a well-balanced design that offers good stability and performance under sail, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced sailors.

Spacious Interior: The cabin layout provides a surprising amount of living space for a 26-foot boat. It typically includes a V-berth and additional sleeping areas, along with a galley and head, making it perfect for weekend cruising.

Ease of Handling: The Hunter 26 is designed for ease of sailing, with features like a masthead rig and roller furling headsail, allowing for simpler handling, especially for solo sailors.

Good Storage Solutions: The interior offers ample storage compartments that help keep the living space organized, essential for longer trips.

Affordable Maintenance: Generally, these boats are reasonably priced in the used market, making them a good option for those new to sailing who want a quality boat without a hefty investment.

Cons

Limited Speed: While stable, the speed potential may not match that of more performance-oriented designs, which could be a consideration for those looking to race.

Moderate Accommodation: While spacious for its size, the living quarters may still feel cramped for larger crews or families spending extended periods on board.

Build Quality Concerns: Some owners have raised concerns about the quality of materials and craftsmanship in certain areas, noting that wear and tear can occur faster than on higher-end models.

Limited Headroom: While the interior is spacious, some may find the headroom restrictive, especially for taller individuals.

Less Finicky Sail Plan: The simplicity of the rigging can be a double-edged sword, as seasoned sailors may prefer a more complex setup for enhanced performance options.
