Second Generation Eastbay Concepts

Reflections on Eastbay 39/007

Second Generation Eastbay Concepts

The 2006 Eastbay 39 #007 taught us about the many design improvements developed by Hunt Designs and Grand Banks for this latest generation Eastbay.

The cockpit has been improved with great visibility aft from the helm station with no obstructions.  This is the first Eastbay model to address cockpit seating with a forward-facing picnic seat.  Other additions to the cockpit include an ice maker and bar in a molded-in cabinet.  The interior and cockpit décor blend to provide the same family area décor and function.  The large lazarette locker with a hydraulic lifting hatch is well-designed for storage and access to the steering gear.

The superstructure has been modernized with a curved solid aft enclosure with a solid door between the cockpit and helm deck. The windows in the door and enclosure ensure good visibility aft from the helm station. This heavy duty fiberglass door allows for improved temperature and sound control on the helm deck.  The hardtop includes more generous overhangs for improved sun protection for the Helm Deck.

The Helm Deck has two Stidd chairs, with a chart table at the navigator's seat. The addition of an entertainment center with a lifting TV increases the appeal of the upper salon.  The center section of the windshield opens electrically.  The windows are “frameless” for reduced maintenance, and the tinted safety glass on all windows improves temperature control and reduces the UV rays affect on the interior finishes and upholstery of the Helm Deck.  The side windows slide open easily, and the center window opens electrically which makes for great ventilation on the Helm Deck.

Down below the Salon has been opened up to a large split level area by the redesigning of the galley.

The “U” shaped galley to port has been replaced by a straight galley to starboard.  The new galley design is simplified for short range cruising with a microwave/convection oven and a cook top.  The refrigeration is state of the art.  The larger salon has a seven foot long “L” settee and pedestal table to port which makes into a generous double berth.  This new design creates more living space below and more privacy from people on the dock and adjacent boats.  The head and shower are larger with improved access, and a contemporary design. The lighting throughout has been drastically improved with recessed LED fixtures.

The Owner's Stateroom has an island bed layout where the bed itself is larger than any of the first generation Eastbays whether a 38, 40, 43, 49, or 54!  This new layout does not sacrifice any storage or the traditional Eastbay styling of the Owner's Stateroom.

As to performance, the draft has been reduced to 3' 4” from 3' 11” with no loss of the solid ride and seakeeping ability the Eastbay boats are known for.  This boat runs up to 8.5 knots without the stern digging in, and begins planing at 9.3-9.5 knots.  She rises gently with nose down provided by a gentle touch to the trim tab controls.  Lower decibels at cruising speeds are due to the insulation characteristics of the fiberglass Helm Deck door.  Five bladed propellers are now standard equipment.

Construction techniques have been improved with the use of newer composite technologies.  The hull is laminated with Hydrex resin and closed-cell foam coring above the waterline.  The bottom is still solid fiberglass.  The electrical system has been improved with a better layout and access.

Special Features

Originally commissioned for the higher latitudes of Canada, Tealaweigh was outfitted with additional electric cabin heaters that run off the inverter and no air conditioning.  She was then recommissioned on the East Coast of the US by a new owner in 2016 who wanted the best features for cruising warmer latitudes.
