RIG, SAILS & HARDWARE

The mast is the free-standing, carbon fiber spar for which Freedom Yachts is so well known. The main is fully battened and has two built in reefs which are fully set from the safety of the cockpit. The jib has the standard Camberspar for easy self-tacking and self tending and this will wing out automatically on a run. Sail cover for the main is recent and is integrated to the sail. There is a rigid boom vang for extra control and safety and lazy jacks control the sail and sail cover when it's lowered. All sail controls are lead to the cockpit through clutch style deck stoppers and all sail handling can be managed from the cockpit on a two speed electric winch.

  • Carbon-fiber keel-stepped mast -- un-stayed: no shrouds or backstays
  • Main sail by Quantum, fully battened with high-roach
  • Electric winch by Harken with Antal slides for smooth sail raising
  • Self-tacking jib on Camber spar boom with outhaul & furling lines to the helm
  • Halyards and reefing lines lead to cockpit with cabin top rope clutches

HULL & DECK GEAR

FLAG BLUE HULL with double white boot stripes and a white cove stripe. The deck is white gel coat with contrasting ivory color non-skid, for a clean traditional look.

SELF TACKING Jib equipment and sail handling led to the cockpit. Tacking FREEDOM does not require any line handling, just turn the wheel to the new course. To transition from close hauled to downwind sailing, simply adjust the single lines controlling the jib and main.

ALL LINES LEAD TO COCKPIT. The deck is clean and easy to maintain with NO TEAK beyond the step on the swim platform with the WALK-THROUGH TRANSOM to the cockpit. Stainless steel DORADE VENTS add fresh air to the cabin even when the boat is closed up. Portlights, stanchions, grab rails, bow and stern rails, and cowl vents are all 316 grade quality stainless. Stanchions and double lifelines are higher than industry standard for added safety. Boarding gates to port and starboard.

Freedom Yachts Rig Design

Freedom Yachts was the maker of the Freedom (sail) and Legacy (power) yacht brands. The Freedom sailboats have unstayed rigs, meaning that the mast is freestanding and not supported by the normal set of wires called standing rigging. Garry Hoyt, a champion sailor and noted maverick, created the unstayed rigs to give "freedom" from the inefficient sail shapes of traditional sloop rigs as well as to give "freedom" from the compression and maintenance issues associated with standing rigging.
