If you check out the FF33 "Finnesse", be sure to look at the mainsheet system as well as the way to trim the self-tacking jib. The boat originally had a traveler mounted on the cockpit seat. To reduce the hazardous lines and blocks crossing in heavy air tacking or gibing, a single point connection on the cockpit sole was installed. Gates were added to the life lines. If that set up was good enough for the high end mega yachts in the Med it should work on a little boat in the Chesapeake. It does. With the help of Jim Donovan the mainsheet system was converted to a “German system” with the main sheets lead to winches at the aft of the coaming on either side of the cockpit. The starboard size 40 Harken winch was replaced with a size 40 Harken electric rewind winch that allows you to haul the line in or let it out provided there is enough tension on the line. The winches can be reached from the helm on either side and the control buttons for the electric winch are on the starboard side of the cockpit. The size 40 winch that was removed was relocated to the starboard side of the cabin top replacing the size 32 halyard winch. The size 32 winch on the port cabin top was replaced with a second size 40 Harken electric rewind winch. This is used to haul up the main and fairleads were install on both the port and starboard sides so the halyards can be cross sheeted to either winch. So all the lines can be led to the electric winch. The toping lift is used as the self-taking jib sheet which is lead to the rewind winch on the port side. So both sails can be trimmed in and out with the rewind winches. To top it off a remote control system installed so you can trim both sails using a fob while sitting at the helm. You will be hard pressed to find a boat that is better set up for double handing or single handing. The electric winches can not be used when racing but that was not the focus. Some older couples might find the boat satisfy their needs or the modifications can be reversed or equipment added to set it up for more competitive racing.
