1940 Elco Cruisette

A familiar and beloved sight in Camden Harbor, CANDACE III has been under the mindful stewardship of Richard Stetson and Bridget Qualey for the past thirty-five years. Built by the Electric Launch Company (Elco) of Bayonne, New Jersey and designed by Irwin Chase, this Cruisette 39 embodies the beauty, craftsmanship, and grace of a bygone era - a true classic that continues to turn heads wherever she goes.

For decades, CANDACE III has served as the committee boat for the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta and its feeder races, her flawless brightwork gleaming and her presence complimenting the timeless elegance of the fleet. She has been maintained at the highest yacht standards, stored and cared for in a purpose-built shop in Camden, and treated with the kind of respect and affection that only true wooden boat aficionados can provide.

CANDACE III's maintenance and restoration history reflects this devotion: in 1999 her stem and foredeck were renewed by Rockport Marine, and in 2008-09 she underwent substantial structural work including replacement of frames and floor timbers throughout the salon area, along with complete rebuilds of both engines. Earlier in her life, her aft section was also carefully rebuilt by previous owners. The result is a vessel that remains structurally sound, mechanically reliable, and remarkably original.

One of CANDACE III's most distinctive qualities is her authenticity. Many vintage cruisers of her era have been altered or modernized, but CANDACE III retains her original layout, fittings, and charm.

A single berth occupies the forepeak, followed by a large vanity and dresser with a leaded glass mirror to port and upper and lower pilot berths to starboard. Next aft are an enclosed head to port and galley to starboard. Stepping up into the raised salon - with twin rebuilt engines beneath - you'll find two plush forward-facing helm seats, a convertible dinette to starboard, and a settee opposite that doubles as a berth. Headroom is generous, comfortably accommodating a 6'1" occupant.

Her aft deck offers up a sheltered space just right for morning coffee or an evening cocktail, with deck chairs oriented to take in the view from beneath the shade of her overhanging roof.

Underway, CANDACE III cruises contentedly at 10 knots at 2000 RPM, consuming approximately 5 gallons per hour. Original sea trial documents record a maximum speed of 22 knots, though her current owners sensibly favor quiet efficiency and grace over haste.
