Overview

This aft cockpit sloop is arranged with 2-separate staterooms, two enclosed head/shower compartments, a spacious saloon including a convertible U-Shaped settee with dining table, saloon bench seating that converts to a quarter berth, a navigation station, as well as a fully appointed galley.  The floor plan can accommodate seven overnight (two in each stateroom, two at the convertible saloon's settee, and one on the saloon port-side berth).  The interior is well-ventilated and bright with cabin side windows and portholes as well as opening overhead deck hatches. The cabin also boasts heat/air conditioning, teak & holly laminate sole, Corian countertops, and 6'4" of headroom.  High gloss varnished teak wood is also used throughout the interior and it is notable that the headliner is a low-maintenance white plastic with decorative teak accents.  Outside, the deck arrangement is clean and uncluttered.  The generous aft cockpit features removable cushions, large canvas Bimini top and forward dodger, drink holders, a fold-away cockpit table, (2) Edson wheel steering stations, (2) aft rail corner seats and easy water access aft.  The exterior hull color is white with blue accent striping, navy blue canvas, and black anti-fouling bottom paint.

  • Fiberglass hull with a full structural grid hull and vinylester resin barrier coating to resist osmatic blistering
  • Liner is bonded to the hull
  • Wing keel with stainless steel bolts
  • Hand-laminated spade rudder with 316 stainless steel core and post with low friction rudder bearings

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 2001 Catalina 400 MkII is a popular cruising sailboat known for its spacious design and solid performance. Here are some of the pros and cons to consider:

Pros

Spacious Interior: The Catalina 400 MkII offers a roomy layout with comfortable accommodations for extended cruising, including multiple cabins and ample storage.

Solid Construction: Built with quality fiberglass and thoughtful craftsmanship, it provides durability and reliability on the water.

Good Sailing Performance: With a well-balanced sail plan and moderate displacement, it handles well in a variety of wind conditions, making it suitable for both coastal and offshore sailing.

Upgraded Features: The MkII model includes improvements over the original 400, such as refined deck hardware and updated interior finishes, enhancing overall usability and comfort.

Large Cockpit: The cockpit is designed for ease of handling and socializing, offering plenty of space for crew and guests.

Cons

Weight: Being a moderately heavy cruiser, the Catalina 400 MkII may not be as quick or responsive as lighter, performance-oriented sailboats.

Draft Considerations: The standard keel draft might limit access to shallower anchorages, which could be a factor depending on your cruising grounds.

Older Systems: As a 2001 model, some onboard systems and equipment may require updating or maintenance to meet modern standards.

Engine Power: The factory-installed engine is adequate but might feel underpowered for certain conditions or when maneuvering in tight marinas.
