Pros:
- Spacious Interior: The Catalina 36 offers ample living space below deck, including a large salon, a well-equipped galley, and comfortable sleeping quarters, making it ideal for extended cruising.
- Stable and Comfortable Sailing: With a moderate displacement and a well-designed keel, the Catalina 36 provides a smooth and stable ride, suitable for both coastal and offshore sailing.
- Good Performance: While not a racing boat, the Catalina 36 delivers respectable sailing performance, especially in moderate wind conditions.

- Reliable Build Quality: Catalina Yachts are known for solid fiberglass construction and durable hardware, contributing to the boat’s longevity.
Cons:
- Heavier Weight: The moderate displacement can make the boat feel heavier compared to more performance-oriented sailboats, potentially affecting speed in light wind.
- Older Systems: As a 1985 model, some of the onboard systems and equipment may be outdated and require upgrading or replacement.
- Limited Headroom: While comfortable, the interior headroom might feel a bit constrained for taller individuals.
- Maintenance: Like any older boat, maintenance and upkeep can be time-consuming and costly, especially if previous owners have deferred routine care.
- Design Limitations: The deck layout and rigging reflect the design standards of the mid-1980s and may lack some modern conveniences or ergonomic improvements found on newer models.
Overall, the 1985 Catalina 36 remains a solid choice for sailors seeking a dependable and comfortable cruising sailboat with a proven track record.

1985 Catalina 36 Full Details
The Catalina 36 has a very spacious and versatile layout below decks. There is a good-sized private v-berth cabin forward with storage closets and an overhead hatch.
Next going aft, the head compartment is on the port side with head, sink/vanity and a shower area. Just across the passageway from the head there is nice built-in cabinetry to store extra gear and clothing.
The spacious main cabin has a convertible high/low table on the port side with wraparound seating. Across on starboard there is more seating and a smaller table that also lowers to make an extra bunk.
The fully equipped galley is on the port side adjacent to the companionway. There is a double sink, CNG range/oven and a deep icebox equipped with Adler Barbour 12-volt fridge/freezer.
The navigation desk is located on the starboard side followed by the entrance to the aft cabin. The aft cabin has a long seat along the starboard side and a double bunk tucked under the cockpit sole. With the filler cushion in place the entire cabin turns into an enormous king-sized bed.
With newer upholstery in the main cabin, LI PO shows nicely for a classic Catalina 36.
