Forward of the head and galley is the salon featuring an aft-facing nav station and settee berth to port and a U-shaped settee (which converts to a double berth) and a dining table to starboard.

Next forward is a comfortable V-berth with storage under, four drawers to port and a hanging locker to starboard.

The aft cabin has a large athwartships berth aft and a settee to starboard.

The engine is located under the companionway steps.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1989 Catalina 34 is a popular cruising sailboat known for its blend of comfort, performance, and affordability. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Spacious Interior: The Catalina 34 offers a roomy cabin layout with comfortable sleeping accommodations for up to six people, making it ideal for extended cruising or weekend trips.

Solid Construction: Built with a robust fiberglass hull, the boat is known for its durability and longevity.

Good Sailing Performance: With a balanced sail plan and a moderate displacement, it provides stable and predictable handling, suitable for both novice and experienced sailors.

Ample Storage: The design includes plenty of storage compartments below deck, which is convenient for long voyages.

Affordable Maintenance: Parts and upgrades are generally accessible and reasonably priced due to the boat’s popularity and widespread use.

Attractive Aesthetics: Classic lines and a well-thought-out deck layout make the Catalina 34 appealing both visually and functionally.

Cons

Weight: The boat is somewhat heavier compared to more modern designs, which can affect light-wind performance.

Outdated Systems: Being a 1989 model, some onboard systems such as electrical, plumbing, or navigation equipment may require upgrading for modern standards.

Limited Headroom: While spacious, the cabin headroom can feel slightly restricted for taller individuals.

Keel and Rudder Design: The fin keel and spade rudder, while effective, may not perform as well in very shallow waters or extreme conditions compared to some newer keel designs.

Sail Handling: The standard sail plan and rigging might require some attention or modification to optimize ease of handling, especially for single-handed sailing.
