Step aboard the Boreal 47, and you'll immediately understand why this design has earned a reputation as one of the most thoughtfully engineered blue-water cruisers afloat. Every detail serves a purpose - and together, they create a vessel with exceptional balance, strength, and offshore capability.
From the windlass positioned at the mast base to keep chain weight low and centered, to the tanks, batteries, and ballast strategically concentrated, the Boreal 47 delivers a level of sea-kindliness few yachts can match. Dual watertight crash bulkheads, forward and aft, offer an added layer of security and make this yacht truly expedition-ready.
Yet all this rugged practicality is wrapped in a design that feels effortlessly elegant. The Boreal 47 achieves that rare harmony of form and function - purposeful without being utilitarian, luxurious without a hint of pretense. And if you're searching for a true ultra-shoal-draft cruiser that's as beautiful as it is easy to own and maintain, you would be remiss not to experience LUNACY firsthand.
LUNACY was purchased new in France in 2017 and proved her pedigree immediately with a North Atlantic crossing to New England. She was showcased at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis in 2017 and 2018 and earned top honors as Cruising World's 2018 Boat of the Year. Since then, she has spent idyllic summers on the coast of Maine and winters exploring the Caribbean and southeastern U.S.
Professionally maintained and continually upgraded by the highly regarded Maine Yacht Center, LUNACY represents a rare opportunity to own a Boreal 47 that is fully proven, meticulously cared for, and ready for her next adventure.
Step aboard - and discover why sailors around the world consider the Boreal 47 in a class of its own.
2017 Boreal 47 is an aluminum, lifting keel sailing yacht designed for serious offshore and high-latitude cruising. It was named "Boat of the Year" in the U.S. in 2018
- Hull Material: All aluminum construction (high-quality 5083 and 5086 H111 alloy), known for its strength and ability to be beached.
- Keel Type: Features a lifting (centerboard) keel and twin aft daggerboards, allowing for shallow draft access while offering deep-keel performance when deployed.
- Doghouse: A signature feature is the raised deck saloon/doghouse navigation station, providing panoramic, 360-degree visibility and protection from the elements.
- Interior: Joinery is natural Ash, with a practical layout designed for offshore passages, including leeboards for sleeping while underway.
- Storage: Ample storage is a key design element, including a large aft lazarette and a sail locker in the bow.
In addition to the centerboard, the Boreal 47 features two smaller, retractable daggerboards located in casings on either side of the shallow central rudder near the stern.
- Helm Trim: These boards are a unique feature used to fine-tune the boat's handling characteristics. Dropping one of the boards can help balance the helm, reducing weather helm (the tendency to turn into the wind) when the main centerboard is loaded up.
- Enhanced Stability: When both aft daggerboards are lowered, the boat gains significant directional stability, sailing more like a traditional long-keeled vessel. This allows the autopilot to steer more efficiently, even for long periods, which is ideal for ocean passages.
- Maneuverability: With the boards raised, the boat becomes more responsive and behaves more like a lighter yacht, which is advantageous for maneuvering in confined waters like marinas or tight anchorages.
- Construction: The aft boards are made of polyester (designed to "fuse," or shear away, in case of a major impact) within robust aluminum casings, ensuring durability and safety.
