"The DUNLIN is a very good example of a professionally renovated classic yacht that was well built to begin with. She is very heavily built, more along the lines of a commercial fishing vessel than a typical 42-foot yacht of the period. The overall appearance of the vessel is very good."
She is a heavily constructed classic wood yacht built along the lines and scantlings of Pacific Northwest Salmon Trollers, Alaska Forest Service boats (aka Ranger Boats) and their Canadian counterparts. She was originally designed by Lee & Brinton and built in 1920 by the N.J. Blanchard Boat Co. Naval architect H.C. Hanson did the design work for the yacht conversion, Atlas engine installation and raising of the aft deck in 1930. The Dunlin was originally built for George Broom of the historic George Broom & Sons Inc. rigging and sail making company which was founded in Seattle in 1910. Mr. Broom used DUNLIN as a daily commuter vessel for trips between his home in Port Madison on Bainbridge Island and his place of business in Seattle.
Construction:
Hull Planking: Carvel, 1 3/8" thick Douglas fir, Alaska yellow cedar, Red cedar and mahogany.
Frames: White oak, steam bent on approx. 9" centers. New frames are 2" x 2 1/8". Original frames are 2" x 2".
Plank Fasteners: New fasteners are galvanized steel wood screws, #16 x 3".
Keel: Douglas fir, rabbeted with 7 ½" sided dimension.
Keel Shoe: Iron bark, 1 5/8" x 6".
Floor Timbers: White oak, 2" x various heights.
Shelf Timber: Painted, 2 ½" x 4 3/8".
Clamp Timber: Painted, 2 ½" x 4 3/8".
Longitudinals: Painted, two (2) per side. Uppers - 1 ¾" x 4 ½'; Lowers - 2 ½" x 5 ½"
Engine Bed Stringers: Douglas fir, 5" x 11 ¼".
Horseshoe Stern: Built of solid Alaska yellow cedar and Sapele lifts.
Bulkheads: Marine plywood and tongue and groove Douglas fir.
Deck Beams: Painted, 2 ½" x 5".
Exterior Decks:
- Fore Deck: 1 1/8" Red cedar tongue and groove overlaid with ½" marine plywood and painted fiberglass sheathing. Total deck thickness on the fore deck is 1 7/8". - Aft Deck: Totally replaced including deck beams in 2010 with ¾" tongue and groove Red cedar, ½" marine plywood overlay and sheathed with painted fiberglass. Total thickness of aft deck is 1 ¼".
- Well Decks: Each fitted with fore and aft deck drains.
- Cockpit Sole and Sides: ¾" marine plywood sheathed with painted fiberglass. Sole is fitted with two (2) bronze deck drains.
Bulwarks: Solid Sapele lifts with Sapele cap rails stem to stern. Generally, 3 ½" x 5 ½" including the rail cap.
Recent Work: (Accomplished from 6/2009 to Present)
- New Purpleheart stem and fore foot knee installed.
- New Alaska yellow cedar breast hook installed.
- 65 % of hull planking below the waterline replanked.
- New Walter four-pass keel cooler installed.
- Bronze thru-hull fittings and seacocks (5) replaced or overhauled as needed.
- Wilcox-Crittenden marine toilet refurbished.
- 100 % of hull at and above the waterline replanked.
- Approx. nine (9) deteriorated solid timber lifts that make up the stern were replaced with African mahogany (Sapele).
- New propeller installed.
- 90 new White oak frames (45 per side) installed reaching from the sheer line to approx. three feet below the waterline.
- New Red cedar sponsons and Purpleheart guards installed.
- Aft deck and cockpit totally replaced with new Apitong deck beams, Red cedar tongue and groove decking, marine plywood with fiberglass sheathing.
- New aft companionway framing and trim installed.
- Entire fore deck replaced/repaired in same fashion as the aft deck.
- Port and starboard well decks reframed and renewed with marine plywood sheathed in fiberglass.
- Deteriorated sections of shelf timbers replaced with African mahogany. - All covering boards replaced with African mahogany as part of deck replacements.
- New African mahogany leveling pads installed for all deck mounted hardware and equipment including the exhaust funnel.
- Bulwarks and cap rail totally replaced with solid African mahogany.
- New 75-gallon stainless steel water tank and related plumbing installed.
- Two (2) new steel air receivers and related valves and piping installed.
- Two (2) new welded steel diesel fuel tanks.
- All new and remaining hull planks fastened with #16 x 3" galvanized wood screws.
- Hull totally recalked with cotton stem to stern, keel to deck edge.
- Bronze stuffing box and stern tube housing bead blasted and reinstalled.
- Two new bronze hanger bolts for the stuffing box fabricated and installed.
- Stuffing box shaft bearing clearance is .015", well within acceptable limit of .030"
- New rubber cutlass bearing installed.
- All twelve (12) bronze 7" dia. opening port lights bead blasted, repainted and reinstalled with new bedding and fasteners.
- Atlas model #2 Anchor windlass refurbished.
- Right angle mechanical drive and cone clutch for the anchor windlass refurbished.
- Engine Work: Fuel distribution system overhauled; New fuel injector tips installed; Governor overhauled; All rocker gear, cam followers and control rods overhauled; Engine driven oil pump, air compressor and cooling water circulation pump overhauled; Boroscope inspection of cylinders yielded excellent results with desired level of cross-hatching observed on the cylinder walls; New 750-watt engine block heater installed.
- Transmission Work: Joe's marine clutch and planetary transmission overhauled; Propulsion shaft thrust bearing inspected and realigned; Main engine to transmission shaft realigned.
- New Simrad chartplotter/multi-function display installed.
- New Simrad radar purchased but yet to be installed.
- Galvanic isolator installed.
- Anodes replaced as needed.
- AC electrical panel upgraded.
