Adventure carries a history of hard use paired with consistent maintenance. Originally commissioned and operated by Sunsail UK as a charter and training yacht, she experienced intensive service and underwent multiple repairs prior to her current ownership. This period of operation left visible signs of use on the deck, cockpit, and interior woodwork, all of which were fully documented and disclosed in the pre-purchase survey completed in 2021. Since acquisition, the current owners have invested significantly in repairs, upgrades, and ongoing maintenance to ensure the vessel remains fully functional, reliable, and safe.
Since 2021, Adventure has undertaken serious offshore cruising. She was actively sailed in the Baltic Sea throughout 2022 before being prepared for an Atlantic crossing in late 2023. That crossing was successfully completed in January 2024, after which she has been lived aboard while cruising the Caribbean. These passages clearly demonstrate her capability and resilience as a blue-water-capable vessel when properly maintained and handled. With conscientious care throughout both her refit and cruising history, Adventure offers a dependable platform ready for her next owner's voyages.
The interior layout is practical, versatile, and well suited to extended cruising. Adventure features two aft cabins, each with a double berth, providing comfortable accommodation for family cruising or shared ownership. The forward cabin also includes a double berth with ample storage, completing the three-cabin layout typical of the First 40 class. The saloon is generous in size, seating up to eight people around a large foldable table and serving as a natural social hub onboard. A dedicated navigation station is located to starboard, with a well-appointed galley to port suitable for longer passages. A single forward head with shower serves the interior. One aft cabin is currently without a mattress; a mattress cover is aboard.
Above decks, the cockpit is exceptionally large and highly functional, offering ample space for both crew and storage. A substantial storage compartment beneath the cockpit sole provides valuable stowage for cruising equipment, lines, and safety gear. The cockpit ergonomics are well suited to both comfortable cruising and competitive sailing.
Adventure is equipped with a comprehensive Garmin navigation suite, bringing modern reliability and functionality to her systems. This includes a Garmin GPSMAP 923 chartplotter installed in the cockpit in 2023, a Garmin GMR-18 radar from 2023, a Garmin Reactor autopilot with linear drive installed in 2022, four Garmin GMI-10 repeater instruments in the cockpit, and a Garmin AIS-400 transponder. Additional equipment includes Hydrovane windvane steering, LiFePO₄ batteries, solar charging, and a Starlink Mini system. Together, this electronics and power package supports safe coastal and offshore navigation and provides excellent situational awareness for extended passages.
Built with performance at the forefront, this Farr-designed hull features a moderately light displacement and a sail plan tuned for capable sailing in both light and stronger winds. Owners Comments and Boat History
I admit that I was initially drawn to this boat by her sleek Bruce Farr design. Later, I discovered that she also delivers excellent sailing performance. We are usually the fastest boat around, even though we are cruisers rather than racers. The beauty of this boat lies in her balance under sail. The large wheel makes her extremely light on the helm, and sitting next to the wheel she can be sailed with just two fingers. With six winches and a simple deck layout, she is easy to handle either single-handed or by a couple.
Her seakeeping qualities are surprisingly pleasant. We have sailed through some challenging weather and always felt safe aboard. The Yanmar engine is very reliable and not overly noisy. Manoeuvring under power is excellent thanks to the saildrive — she turns almost on her central axis, and whether moving forward or astern, she responds exactly as expected.
The cockpit is huge and offers ample space for both sailing and social gatherings with fellow sailors. The large bimini provides excellent protection from sun and rain, adding greatly to onboard comfort. A very large storage compartment beneath the cockpit floor easily accommodates a dinghy, liferaft, and much more.
The accommodation is surprisingly spacious and practical. The interior is finished in light oak, is very well ventilated, and features a large saloon table where six people can comfortably dine together. Well-placed handholds provide security while underway. All berths are true double-bunk size. The navigation table is generously sized and includes additional storage space.
This First 40 is a former charter and training yacht from Sunsail UK, which I purchased in 2021. During her time with Sunsail, the boat was intensively used and underwent several repairs. As a result, there are some hairline cracks visible on the deck and cockpit, and the interior woodwork shows signs of use. All of these items were fully documented in the survey report conducted at the time of purchase. Since then, we have carried out many repairs and upgrades to equipment throughout the boat.
We sailed the Baltic Sea in 2022 and departed for our Atlantic crossing in 2023. The crossing was completed successfully in January 2024, and we have been living aboard since June 2023. She has been well maintained throughout and has proven herself across the Atlantic and in the Caribbean. You can expect a fully functional and reliable boat.
