Vessel Walk Thru

PAQUET V was designed and built for legendary marine hardware innovator Fred Schaefer.  The design, by Henry Scheel, a known innovator himself, was to be a light, strong, easily driven, efficient hull, with classic good looks that could be managed easily by a couple for long periods of time, as well accommodate guests for a good stretch, too.  While her primary cruising grounds were to be New England, there were plans to do the Canadian Maritimes, Bahamas and perhaps a Great Loop trip.  By any account, she greatly exceeded all expectations on all fronts.  While Scheel did the specs, her longevity, in excellent condition, is thanks to the superb build quality from Sonny Hodgdon.  While we credit Hodgdon Yachts here, this vessel precedes the corporate entity by a few years. She was built by Hodgdon Bros but with the same crew, same attention to detail, and attitude that Sonny instilled, that "the right way is the only way we know how to do it".

Her interior is a work of art done Herreshoff Style, in varnished Birds Eye Maple on off- white, flat panels with varnished laid teak and holly soles.  Completely re-finished in 1995, it appears just years old, not decades.  Given the dimensions one might presume that the interior is diminutive, but Fred Schaefer was a big guy at 6'-3" and over 250 lbs, and tiny would not do!  Although she is certainly not a large boat Henry Scheel was very attentive to detail and ergonomics so that a man like Fred would be comfortable onboard.  Her head room is 6'-4" throughout, with the exception of the forward stateroom, where it is a fraction less.  Given her size, none of the spaces are voluminous, yet they all work, even for those with a larger frame. 

There is light and natural ventilation abound with six large fixed ports, four opening ports and three large hatches, as well as companionway doors.  When there is a chill in the air, either reverse cycle air conditioning (heats and cools) or two Espar diesel cabin heat units manage the climate control.  There is also ample 12-Volt lighting throughout.

Starting forward is the private Guest Stateroom with 6'-8" V-berth with filler. Below the berth there are four large cargo drawers. Above the berth the hull is lined with Birds Eye Maple sheathing and a full-length shelf with fiddle.  Aft of the port V is a generous hanging locker, while to starboard is the Guest Head. 

The Guest Head features a manual W.C. plumbed via a Y-valve. To the holding tank this is an athwartship vanity and stainless sink with pressure H&C water.

Continuing aft is Main Cabin with a raised 7'-8" U-shaped dining settee to port, and U- shaped Galley to starboard.  The dining settee is set up with a pedestal table that drops down to act as a filler, forming a large double.  There is storage and a battery locker under the settee.  Above and outboard is a storage shelf and entertainment equipment, and other storage is available forward.  Further storage is in a low drawer below the raised settee.

The Galley is fitted with Corian-style countertops with a large single basin stainless sink with H&C pressure water and a large "ice box" fitted with Grunert 110-Volt refrigeration with a separate freezer compartment.  Cooking is managed from a Tasco stainless steel three-burner propane stove plumbed to two 12 lb propane tanks.  There is plenty of storage in a number of lockers and drawers.

Up four steps is the Center Cockpit. It has a port side helm station with custom teak swivel helm and companion chairs forward, with bench seats aft and storage underneath.

Aft and down three steps (storage under) is the Master Stateroom, which has wide 6'-8" berths P&S with drawer storage below and shelves above.  These berths are also comfortable lounging settees should one wish to be aft during the day.  There is a large 1/2 height hanging locker forward with adjoining bureau the top of which serves as a chart table.

Adjoining the stateroom is the private Master Head, fitted with an ensuite shower, draining to a separate sump with pump, Vacuflush fresh water W.C., and a Corina vanity with stainless sink and H&C pressure water.  An especially attractive feature is the companionway to the cockpit with bench seats P&S and a large teak pedestal table.

The exterior is easy to move around with wide access from the center cockpit P&S to the side decks  which have double stainless steel stanchions and lifelines with gates P&S and double stainless bow rail.  There is excellent storage for deck gear under the bench seats in the cockpit and in deck boxes.  Boarding from a tender is easy with her partial width teak swim platform and large centerline transom door.

Electrical

Wired for 12-Volt DC and 110-Volt AC service.  A 2000 Watt inverter provides light load AC service when off the dock, while a Northern Lights 5KW generator handles heavier loads (new raw water pump 2017, new stainless steel exhaust elbow 2005).

Mechanical

Perkins fresh water cooled, naturally aspirated,  6 cylinder 6.3544, 125 hp diesel showing 4389 hours turns a 4 bladed wheel on a 1 1/2" shaft through a Borg Warner 1.9:1 reduction gear.  The engine will provide cruise speeds to approximately 10 knots but the owner reports maximum efficient cruise to be 8 knots, burning just 2 gallons per hour for an astounding 4 NMPG!

Access to the engine compartment is through large double hatches in the center cockpit. All systems are very accessible.

Hull & Deck

Launched in December of 1981 by Hodgdon Bros. "Sonny" Hodgdon, PAQUET V is ruggedly built, and with her moderately narrow hull, she is a sea kindly boat.  Three layers of West System epoxy saturated 1/4" (think strip planking in the bottom - two of Port Orford Cedar and one horizontal layer of Mahogany) and two layers in the topsides (one of Cedar one of Mahogany) fastened to 1-3/8" X 2" White Oak frames on 10-1/2" centers.  8" White Oak keel timbers.  Both the entire interior and exterior was coated with West System epoxy as well.  The decks are two layers of 1/2" Mahogany plywood, again with liberally applied West System epoxy, and then sheathed in fiberglass.  Deck houses and cockpit and center cockpit soles are of solid teak. 

The teak deck houses are finished in traditional spar varnish in excellent condition throughout while all other surfaces are Awlgrip.

PAQUET V is an exceptional vessel in all regards and shows very well throughout.  Two loving owners have lavished her with attention.  Anyone who can appreciate custom high end craftsmanship will love this capable yacht!  and should be carefully considered by anyone who appreciates a yacht of such character.
