The engines appear to have been re-powered at some point after 2000, as the Mack E7-M engines were not made and on the market until the first quarter of 2001. They are rated at 650 HP each at 2300 RPM's

The Bertram 46 Convertible was for many years the standard by which other production sport fishing boats her size were measured. Her popularity had much to do with the precise handling and impressive sea keeping characteristics of her deep-V hull, a proven rough-water performer with a wide beam and low cockpit freeboard. Several two- and three-stateroom floor plans were available during her production years. Significant updates include a single sliding salon door replacing the original double doors in 1981, a fiberglass cockpit sole (replacing the Nautilex liner) and a new teak interior in 1982, and a transom door in 1985. The 46 III model (1986–87) featured a restyled interior with light oak woodwork and a centerline queen berth forward. Prior to 1981, the most popular engines were the 435hp 8V71TIs, which will cruise around 20 knots (about 23 knots top). In 1981, the 570hp 8V92TIs became available (around 24 knots cruise), and the 600hp versions (1985–87) added another knot of speed. Note that the fuel capacity was increased to 720 gallons in 1983. Still a popular boat on the used market, the Bertram 46 is considered a classic sportfishing design.

In the era of consolidation on the maritime diesel engine market, it is refreshing to report news of a new competitor. Mack Trucks - well known and regarded for the quality, durability and life-cycle performance of its products in land based markets - has created a new business unit, MackPower, dedicated to manufacturing, marketing and servicing a lineup of mack diesel engines for a variety of uses, including marine applications. "There is a lot of potential in the marine (pleasure craft and commercial) market," said Carrie-Ann Baker, manager, sales and marketing. "Mack is known for its durability, reliability and power, and that's what we're delivering to the marine market."

The unit's initial entrant is the Mack E7 mechanical design engine, and the popular Mack E7 E-Tech engine, which is a six-cylinder, 12-liter model featuring an electronic pump-in-line injection system. Both engines offer excellent power-to-weight ratios, and have proven to be miserly in terms of fuel consumption. Mack's robust E9 engine, which is a 16-liter V8 design, will be ready for market in the fourth quarter of 2000, and an electronic version of the E7 engine will be available in the first quarter of 2001, said Baker.
