Broker's Notes
I first met Captain Hubert Muenster in 2005 when I was the broker for the purchase of this boat. He introduced himself as the First Mate of the BOUNTY. I told him he didn't look that old. Turns out that he was indeed what he said. Second in command for the replica vessel that cruised on her own bottom. He spent fifteen years in this capacity, visiting many ports as a historical display.
Captain Herbie is a man of many talents and accomplishments. Born in Austria, he grew up in a poor and devastated post-war Germany. He persevered in difficult circumstances to become among many other things a competent mariner, a talented musician, and a bearer of the Olympic Torch.
Capt Herbie and his lovely wife Linda have spent the past fifteen years cruising the Caribbean. Now the time has come to move to the next phase of their journey. They have purchased an RV and will go land cruising.
Being a prudent mariner by nature, Capt Herbie was aware that support might be scarce as they ventured. So he made sure that UTOPIA was well provisioned with supplies and spares. He estimates that there are some seventy-five fuel and oil filters aboard. And numerous back-up spare parts and systems. Also, an extensive complement of tools will remain aboard.
A sailor by experience, he added masts and sails to UTOPIA, his first power boat, and reports that the sails greatly enhance the vessel?s performance. He says the boat is in good operating order and but for for a fresh bottom is ready to go cruising again.

MAINTENANCE & UPGRDESStarboard engine rebuilt 2015 (new pistons, bearings, etc.) Port engine, new head gasket 2017 New bridge hardtop 2015Engine Hours and MaintenanceThis vessel was converted to a ketch-rigged motorsailor. The captain reports that cruising under sail with the engine operating at about 1,000 rpm, a high idle really, they moved along about 6 kts with great efficiency.
The engine meters currently show a little over 8,000 hours total time. The port engine had a major overhaul in 2016 including new rings, pistons, etc. The starboard engine received a new head in 2017.
Total hours is not the best gauge of engine condition. It's more dependent on the quality of the make and model. And even more so the usage, care and maintenance. You could ruin an engine in a few hundred hours of abuse.
The naturally aspirated Ford Lehman is one of the most reliable and long-lived marine powerplants ever produced. Reports of their lasting 10-12,000 hours or more are common. And in the current application, they were most often "easy" hours, operating at low power settings while motorsailing.
Diesel engines are fairly simple devices, depending mainly on their high compression. They rarely fail without warning. If it starts easily, doesn't smoke excessively, develops power smoothly, and maintains temperature under load, it is likely going to last a good while yet.
If there are further concerns about engine condition, an engine survey may be conducted. Standard Lehman models such as the one in this vessel have injectors that are easily removed for compression checks.
