The hull and double- spreader rig were designed by Alan Gurney. There were 770 of these popular boats built between 1971 and 1986.  She is built of fiberglass construction with cored deck and has a skeg-mounted rudder and fin keel. The foredeck has an anchor locker. The T shape cockpit is reasonably deep and is self-bailing. There are coaming boxes, a starboard cockpit locker with engine access and two lazerettes on the aft helm seat. A slotted aluminum toe rail runs along the gunwale for safety and provides spots to hang fenders, etc. 

Described as one of the most popular racer/cruisers ever, the I-36 was Islander's most popular and longest selling model out of their fleet of boats from 21 to 40 feet. The I-36 offers great performance with her high aspect IOR mainsail and large furling headsail to increase sail area. The boom is high (no banging heads) and the mainsail controls are achieved through a cabin-top winch leading to a traveler. The Islander 36 is noted for her cruising comfort in a cabin with an interior, designed by Joseph Artese Design. From the companionway, the galley is immediately to starboard and a chart table is to port. Aft of that is a quarter berth. In the main salon there are two settees with the port settee capable of unfolding into a double. Forward of the main bulkhead is a head on the port side and hanging locker to starboard. There is a hanging locker in the master cabin forward. The head is private with its own door, sink and storage.

This is a project boat. She has been recently painted, but it was not professionally accomplished. It looks good, at 25 feet away. The decks need paint. The interior needs cleaning and trim work, around the sides of the cabin house.

The starboard lower chain plate is not installed. The athwartship floors in the bilge are water saturated and delaminated. The cabin sole is fiberglass cored. It appears to be water saturated.

The refrigerator and stove work great!
