Tartan Sailboats, built by Tartan Yachts, set out from the beginning to excell in one task: to build sailboats for the discerning sailor, the best handmade sailing yachts in the world. The rich heritage of Tartan Yachts forms the cornerstone of their undertaking.

Tartan emerged on the scene in 1960. Charlie Britton and Olin Stephens worked closely together to develop Tartan's first model, the Tartan 27. That first model began a new generation of fiberglass hulls to replace the wooden ones and catapulted Tartan to the forefront of the boat building industry.

Tartan continued to grow throughout the 70's and 80's, developing and introducing sixteen new models to the marketplace. Each model held true to the traditional hand-crafted design techniques that helped put Tartan on the map. In 1989 the marine industry suffered a sharp decline prompting Tartan to re-establish their focus on quality and redesign their production process. Tartan held on throughout the early 90's as the market began to recover and turned their attention to further investment in tools and the production process. They introduced four more new models as well.

Tartan grew into a new manufacturing facility in 1996 which they built in Ohio. The new facility employs all current materials and manufacturing technologies. Their fully integrated inhouse design and engineering capabilities provide them with the resources to deliver a continuous stream of new and innovative designs to the marketplace. They maintain that their most important asset is the resourceful people who design, build service and sell their boats, many of whom have been doing so for over 20 years.

Tartan has been a leader in the American made, handcrafted sailing yacht industry for over 50 years. They build quality yachts for the most discriminating sailor and will continue to do so for generations to come.
