Jeanneau Yachts Information

Jeanneau Yachts Background Information

Jeanneau Yachts founder, Henri Jeanneau, had a passion for planes and automobiles. A passion that grew to include powerboats back in 1957 after simply seeing one pass by his window. With his attention now focused on power boats, he began designing and building a wooden hull to participate in the 6-hour Paris race with. Mr. Jeanneau not only competed in that race, which was known as the largest national race at the time, but he was the first to finish. Within two years he had hired several apprentice canoe builders and established the Jeanneau shipyards.

Jeanneau unveiled his first fiberglass boat in 1961. The initial build still utilized the lines and wooden deck of a frigate and the fiberglass was molded onto a wooden hull. Later that year, his initial design had evolved into a new all-fiberglass boat. From this single fiberglass mold, hundreds of hulls could be created relatively easily. This was the beginning of a whole new era for Jeanneau. He went on to build and sell over 1500 powerboats from the mold which lead up to the first in a range of great motor yachts, the Imperator 900, in 1966.

Back then, to test the durability of the first fiberglass boats, a boat was hitched to a towrope and put in a nearby lake. It was then launched at full speed over a wooden ramp, clearing a nearby road, to land abruptly in a field. Proving his faith in his own design and construction skills, Henri Jeanneau was at the helm.

From the beginning, each boat was unique, often being customized while still on the production lines. Today, with technological advances much like those seen in the aeronautical field, Jeanneau Yacht designs boats using 3-D design software and digitally controlled laser-cutting machines. Even though over 50 years of development and innovation have advanced the process, the men and women of Jeanneau have managed to preserve their passion for the sea and take pride in a job well done.
