IRENE is now owned by Mass Maritime Academy and available for long term lease with an option to buy

This beautiful day sailor is in like new condition with her gleaming varnished topsides and freshly varnished interior. Irene is a one of a kind, custom day sailor/racer built Newport R.I. in 2013 by master shipwright Richard Calkins and her current owner. She was designed by Matthew Smith a Naval Architect from Barrington RI. The architect took the design from the Herreshoff knockabout and added a modern underwater profile with a bulb keel.

Construction is cold molded and built from 3 layers of Red Cedar. The first layer is 3/8" thick, followed by two 1/8" layers crossed diagonally, and then a final 1/8" layer of African Mahogany making the hull 3/4" thick. West epoxy system was used for the build. Her interior has 2 layers of 10oz cloth and carbon reinforcing along the keel frame. Below the waterline is 2 layers of 10oz cloth. He underwater profile was filled and faired to give her a very smooth finish. An epoxy barrier coat was then applied prior to bottom paint. Her topsides are epoxy sealed varnished African Mahogany.

In 2019 she underwent a major refit by Joe Loughborough of LMI which included redesigning the control systems and sheeting angle for the jib, and adding more mast rake. New cockpit combings were also added at this time. A new Torqeedo  electric motor (2022) is currently been installed at Jamestown Boat yard.

While at the mooring she has two 100-watt solar panels to charge both batteries which are located either side athwart of the mast in battery boxes. A battery monitoring system was also added to monitor the battery charging progress.

For the rig plan, Hall spars designed and built the Carbon mast and boom with a harken roller furler. Sails are by Doyle with the main on Harken ball bearing cars and integrated batten cars. She has a roller furling jib new in 2020 (built by North) and her downwind sails are flown off a custom retractable bowsprit.

Irene will give her new owner the best of both worlds. She is a competitive day racer with a PHRF of 104 but can be enjoyed as the perfect day sailor and can be easily single-handed under both power and sail.
