MJM 36z:
"While the MJM 36zâs looks are classic, her construction is high tech, with a hull of wet pre-preg, vacuum-bagged epoxy/Kevlar/E-glass with Core-Cell foam for strength with the lightest overall weight. This boat is designed with a low center of gravity, which also helps her achieve the unlikely pairing of great fuel economy with a good turn of speed." ~ Passagemaker
Levity is powered with twin Volvo Penta stern drives. Both drives are fitted with two, counter-rotating, three-blade 14in diameter, stainless propellers. She's also outfitted with two, 18x12" stainless steel trim tbs at the outboard section of her transom. Each is controlled with a single ram arm, with control at the vessel's helm.Ã?Â
The MJM 36z is a moderately deep-V with a single hard chine. She's built with two partial lifting strakes on the forward portion of her bottom.Ã? Her hull and deck are built of oven-cured, wet pre-preg, vacuum bagged, epoxy, Kevlar/ E-glass hybrid fabric with multiple density Core-Cell PVC foam core. This 36z is incredibly solid- with a FRP grid with integral engine beds, transverse frames and longitudinal stringers.Ã? Below waterline, Levity is outfitted with a seven-inch diameter, dual propeller bow thruster.Ã? Ã? With her Flag Blue topsides, white boot stripe and gold cove stripe, LevityÃ? will shine in any harbor.Ã?Â
Built by Boston Boat Works, this 2012 MJM "36z is ideal for a couple downsizing from larger power or sail or a young family needing a bit more cruising space. 36z is large enough to seat 3 couples in protected all-weather comfort and for safe passages in offshore waves, yet light and narrow enough for unassisted docking and single-handed operation. 36z is so easy to use; it will keep people boating together through shared adventures, on an almost daily basis. Thanks to narrow beam and low height, 36z is readily shipped by road (with permits but without excess width & height surcharges) between winter and summer residences." ~ MJM 36z Brochure
Ã?Â
Ã?Â
ON DECK:An FRP swim platform is attached to her transom and supported by four solid FRP brackets. This swim platform is fitted with a telescoping 37" Armstrong stainless steel, swim ladder. At her port transom is a Scandvik hot and cold aft deck shower. To starboard, behind a painted, recessed port are her shore power inlets and a stainless steel transom grab handle runs transversely along her beam. Mounted at centerline is her 3x5 American flag with teak staff and retainer pin.Ã? Levity can carry a substantial inflatable dinghy on her transom mounted davit system. (The dinghy pictured in these listings photos is not currently included in this vessel's inventory and will not transfer with ownership.)Ã?Â
Her dark blue Awlcraft 2000 topsides shine with 3 coats of clear for extra protection and durability. She's graced with a single white boot stripe and gold cove stripe and PVC guardrail with high-polished stainless steel rubstrake. Below waterline, she's protected with black, Micron Extra Anti-fouling bottom paint.Ã? Her cockpit is accessed from either side through convenient hull side doors.Ã?Â
"Side opening doors are an MJM innovation for easy boarding access or to exit when handling dock lines. This is a welcome change from climbing up insecure boarding steps or having to jump down onto a float â¦ easier to get aboard when carrying packages, more secure for children or elderly friends, so all may enjoy a day on the water. Openings are also at the perfect 24â height above the water to board from an inflatable dinghy." ~ MJM 36z Brochure
These side-boarding doors are each secured with a heavy-duty latch and retainer magnet. Two aft facing cockpit seats, adorned with bottom cushions, lift to reveal additional storage lockers.Ã? Molded, side-deck access steps, to both port and starboard, bring you up on deck, she's white with light beige/ "buff" non-skid areas, molded quarter-guard with stainless steel rubstrake. Underfoot is a luxurious solid teak deck overlay, which extends on both her cockpit and pilothouse sole- all the way up to her companionway bulkhead.Ã?Â
"The all-weather pilothouse has 6ââ?¬â?¢5ââ?¬ï¿½ headroom and comfortably seats 6ââ?¬Â¦plus another 6 in the cockpit...Ã? all on the same level! This layout, with the table moved to the outside cockpit socket for drinks and hors dââ?¬â?¢oeuvres,Ã? opens up the space nicely for guests at a party. When anchored out for a picnic, the pilothouse can be completelyÃ? opened up like a flybridge (without the ladder). Front windshields fully open and it takes seconds to unzip, roll upÃ? and store the side curtains in place. Good airflow and a sense of being ââ?¬Å?outsideââ?¬ï¿½ are keys to comfort onÃ? a warm day. If rainy, foggy or cold, no problem: Button her up in cabin cruiser mode for air-conditioned comfort withÃ? diesel heater or reverse-cycle air-conditioner. Piloting seats swivel around and lower to become side chairs forÃ? aprÃ?¨s boating moments. At night, settees convert to 6.5ââ?¬â?¢ berths with privacy curtainsÃ? completely enclosing the area." ~ MJM 36z Brochure
At the helm, another of Levity's many upgrades shines: both sides of the aluminum framed windscreen are fitted with electric lift motors for ease of operation and ample natural ventilation are her helm deck. She's equipped with an updated, large Garmin GPSMAP Multifunction display, Garmin VHF, Raymarine auto-pilot, Ritchie compass, Volvo Penta engine data display, Jabsco spotlight controller, Sidepower thruster joystick, Volvo Penta Joystick, Lenco trim tab controlls and Volvo Penta throttles.Ã?Â
At her foremost point of the 1 1/4" stainless steel bow rail is mounted a Jabsco spotlight. Below which is her Muir windlass, polished stainless steel bow guard, bow roller and self-launching Lewmar claw anchor with 250ft of rode/ chain. This ground tackle system is controlled by either foot pedals or remote control. Her deck drains divert runoff into a grey water system which runs out her transom, rather than down along her gorgeous blue topsides. Ample hand/ grab rails are mounted along her decks, making this a safe and secure boat.Ã?Â
Atop her pilothouse roof is mounted a Garmin radar dome, Garmin AIS transceiver, twin trumpet horns and two whip antennas. Below waterline, she's outfitted with a Garmin PANOPTIX PS51-TH LIVEVU forward looking transducer.Ã?Â
Ã?Â
Ã?Â
Ã?Â
Ã?Â
Ã?Â
BELOW DECK:As you proceed down her solid teak companionway steps, you'll note her fine teak companionway hatch and door. Both shine in well attended varnish. Her interior is bright, white FRP, accented with cherry veneer plywood and solid cherry trim. She's finished in satin varnish to the highest standards. Her teak and holly plywood cabin sole is finished in high gloss.Ã?Â
Below deck provides an open space, awash with natural light and air. At the foremost bulkhead is her anchor locker access, two dedicated reading lights and outboard storage shelves to each side. Her center island queen berthÃ? is easily accessed from either side with an ergonomically friendly step/ cushioned seat to either side. Said cushion steps and berth are finished in luxurious, cream colors, Ultra-leather upholstery.Ã?Â
"The Island Berth option is offered for those who prefer to have an elegant berth always made up and who plan to do their dining or socializing in the pilothouse. We found this layout to be particularly attractive to cruising couples. With a memory foam mattress and 2m width, itâs the most comfortable berth ever found on a boat." ~ MJM 36z Brochure
Straight-line galley aft to port. Simply adorned, her galley consists of a molded ice box with Sea Frost holding plate refrigeration, a single sink with hot and cold pressure water system, a signle burner, 120V cook top and microwave oven in her outboard storage.Ã?Â
Her enclosed head compartment is located to starboard. This head is outfitted with a Sea-Land vacuum flush toilet, handheld shower and stainless steel sink. There's ample storage in a sliding locker outboard of her sink, as well as above her marine head and below her sink cabinet. This is a wet compartment where the head faucet dually functions as both a sink faucet and shower head. Levity is outfitted with a dedicated drain in her head compartment sole and shower sump.Ã?Â
"The head is large enough to towel off and change in. The shower utilizes a pullout soft-spray nozzle that allows you to take a shower without soaking the walls, cabinets or hanging towels. A second hot/cold Scanvik shower is located on the swim platform. A VacuFlush head utilizes only a cupful of fresh water per flush and is odorless. In addition to the 18 gallon (68L) holding tank and shore pumpout outlet, a macerator pump with overboard discharge is installed. 36z is equipped with dock hose inlet, 100 galloon freshwater tank, 13m dock hose and wash down faucet in the port cockpit locker." ~ MJM 36z Brochure
Three Lewmar hatches are installed on her cabin trunk. All integral Ocean Air screens and shades are functional. Two Lewmar opening ports are within each side of her cabin trunk, with two heavier Ocean Series ports, forward and within her gunwales. Each opening port has a corresponding bug screen.Ã?Â
PROPULSION & SYSTEMS:Levity is powered with two, five-cylinder freshwater-cooled turbo charged Volvo diesel engines, installed below her aft cockpit bench seat.Ã?Â
"Volvo Pentaâs D3 in-line 5-cylinder, common-rail, turbo-charged diesel engines with electronic controls comply with the worldâs most stringent Tier 3 emission standards. Their lightweight (363 kg with drives) aluminum block helps achieve new levels of performance, smooth operation and fuel efficiency compared to the earlier cast iron D4 and D6 models. These are marine adaptations of the successful 2.4 litre diesel used in Volvoâs XC70 luxury station wagon in Europe. Standard on the 36z are the new OceanX sterndrives with a titanium-ceramic coating and counter-rotating stainless DuoProps. ~ MJM 36z Brochure
Engine Hours as of Sept. 2022: 1132, 1133 & 613 hours on her generator.Ã?Â
Access is provided through her hinged FRP seat. This hatch is fitted neatly with sound deadening material and an automatic fire suppression system- currently tagged as she was inspected in 2022. The steel and rubber isolation mounts remain secure and show well. The raw cooling of both engines is supplied by two bronze intake valves and strainers, installed close to the centerline of the hull, forward of the engines.Ã? A Sea Star hydraulic steering system is connected to each drive.Ã?Â
Her Northern Lights, three-cylinder FWC diesel-powered generator in installed in an acoustically insulated compartment, located below the aft end of the wheelhouse sole and forward of her main engines.Ã?Â
This vessel's 120v AC and 12v DC panels are located to starboard at her companionway steps. This custom, hinge-out and backlit panel is outfitted with stainless breaker guards, digital AC monitor, Blue Seas battery combiner, and 60amp ProSafe FS60 galvanic isolator. Levity is powered by 2 Group 4D 198 AH AGM house batteries; 2 Group 27 92 AH AGM engine-start batteries, 1 Group 27 92 AH AGM generator-start battery, a Constavolt charger, 2 engine driven alternators and Solbian SR+ 175watt walk-on-able solar panels with Victron Blue solar charger controllers.Ã?Â
Aluminum fuel tanks are installed below the outboard bench seats in the wheelhouse, to port and starboard. These tanks are fastened to the vessel's longitudinal stringers and transverse bulkheads. There's a fuel supply shutoff at the aft end of each tank; they're outfitted with a tank top cross over. A Racor 500MA fuel filter services each of her main engines. A Racor 21P filter services the fuel supply to her generator.Ã?Â
The vessel's head waste system is as electrically operated, Sea-Land vacuum type marine toilet, which pumps into a 18 gallon polyethylene waste tank located below the cockpit sole to starboard of the generator. A Sea-Land TW waste discharge pump is installed to said holding tank for overboard discharge operations.Ã?Â
The vessel's domestic water system consists of a 98 gallon polyethylene water tank, installed below the forward section of the wheelhouse sole on an FRP platform, supported by the FRP hull stringers. A Jabsco water pump and accumulator tank are located below the forward, port-side seat of the cockpit. The Iso-Therm stainless steel, 10.5 gallon hot-water tank with 115v AC engine flow through is located centerline, below the wheelhouse sole.
DESIGN, PERFORMANCE AND CONSTRUCTION:Ã?Â
"A length to beam ratio greater than 3:1 provides a better transition from modified V-shaped hull with knife-like
entry to a 13 foot planning surface with 18-degree deadrise, producing a softer entry into waves than is possible
with wider boats. 36zâs bow flare, apart from directing airflow out and away from the pilothouse and cockpit, keeps guests in the stern seat dry and keeps the bow up when running fast down into the backside of waves, eliminating severe yaw (bow steer)... a problem with many Downeast designs. 36z gets up on a plane without the bow-up, climbing-out-of-a-hole behavior of heavier boats and will stay on a plane at over 10 knots. There is a level of joy found driving a 36z, atypical of powerboats with any cruising comfortâ¦it steers with the secure, predictable touch of a good sports-car, intuitively leaning into turns at your command.
Ã?Â
A primary design goal was to offer the ease of joystick control when docking. Another was to create a boat that
could be moored close to home in shallow tidal waters. 36z is one of the first boats to offer Volvo Pentas IPS
computer control maneuvering technology in sterndrives. The joystick system only activates when twin-engine
controls are put in neutral. A button is then pushed on the base of the joystick to activate. Its two-finger control.
Each drive unit is independently operated by computer for direction, rpm and forward-reverse gear to maneuver
the boat in the direction you move the joystick. When the joystick is not activated, the boat can be run as a
conventional twin.
Ã?Â
The 36z is the most fuel efficient boat of its size. When cruising at 26.3 knots with its twin Volvo Penta D3, 5
cylinder diesels it burns 13 gallons (49 liters) an hour with a range of 360 nautical miles. For those who are put off by frequent visits to the fuel dock and high fuel prices, or oneâs carbon footprint on the planet, 36z is the answer. Other than for passage-making, average fuel usage is about 5 gallons or 19 liters per hour.
The aft seat engine cover rises 45 degrees up and aft. Wing fuel tanks are used to improve stability. Full-sized
26 mountain bikes may be stored, hidden away in pilothouse lockers. Mesh bags organize hoses, shore-power
cords, life jackets, etc. Deck drains capture rain and dew that then ows into the gray water system out through the transom rather than over the side through a gap in the toerail â¦ streaking the topsides. There is no exposed teak on deck and if the optional teak & thiokol cockpit decking is installed, thereâs a 3 part cockpit cover or Bimini to minimize weathering.
Ã?Â
36z is ISO (CE) Certified as Offshore Category B and along with other MJM models, may be the only designs of
their type built to exceed international CE Mark (ISO) draft structural requirements for a Class A Ocean-Going
Yacht. MJMâs licensed builder, Boston BoatWorks, has more than 30 years experience in building boats using high tech, wet pre-preg, vacuum-bagged and post-oven-cured, epoxy/Kevlar/E-glass/Corecell construction. The boatâs high strength-to-weight ratio results in lighter overall weight, lower VCG (vertical center of gravity), easier handling, superior fuel efficiency and better speed for the horsepower. Since epoxy has 3x the flexural strength of polyester or vinylester resins, the 36z will have a longer life." ~ MJM 36z Brochure

ADDTL MANUFACTURER PROVIDED DESCRIPTIONS:MJMs goal for all its models has been threefold:
- Create boats that can be easily operated by one person, meaning husband or wife, in the most demanding situations such as when docking or handling in rough seas.
- Be sure that the boat is as comfortable for 2-person cruising for its size as possible AND fun to use with friends (e.g. 2-3 other couples) on a daily, spur-of-the-moment basis to, for example, go out to dinner, go on a short sunset cruise, watch the local sailboat races, or to take the kids to a secluded beach or island. Boats that remain tied up to a dock except for 3-4 trips a year are not very practical unless they replace oneâs year-round home.
- Be easy to own, e.g. minimal maintenance, operating issues and few restraints when docking, mooring or shipping by truck between residences..
Ã?Â
The 36z admirably fulfills all these goals:
- Handling with a combination of a natural-response destroyer wheel in seas and itââ?¬â?¢s IPS-like joystick control with twin engines at idling speeds around docks.Ã?Â
- Welcoming for all ages with side-opening doors and single-level cockpit/ pilothouse that seats 12 comfortably on a good day, 6 in any-weather.
- Ease of Ownership: We know of no other boat that combines the 36z benefits of: Having no exposed wood to maintain on deck; Sterndrives that bounce up, then back down, when striking an underwater object, which when raised are reachable from the swim platform to clear props without going swimming, which can be raised part way for shoal water navigation or all the way for mooring in 17â of water or beaching the boat; Having height dimensions to fit under all 21 bridges (under 9.5 feet) between Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale; Having height and width (12 feet or less) to be trucked without need of chase cars and alternate routing at the price of a 30 footer.
