About the hull
The hull of the Shoalsailor is designed, engineered and constructed to be beached and to withstand the rigors of shoal water sailing. The dual rudders swing up and the propeller is protected by the shallow keel/skeg. The bolt on lead ballast in the keel was designed to absorb impact from grounds. The composite foam core construction is built to the highest standards.
The Design Concept
The Shoalsailor concept and design was put together over a seven year period by Shannon's founder/designer, Walter Schultz in collaboration with George Carter. Shannon set out to create the ultimate coastal cruising yacht unlike any monohull that had been built before. After years of work, the Shoalsailer prototype was launched and the design exceeded all expectations. The Shoalsailor is equipped with self tailing winches near the aft hem stations for single-handed sailing. The mast is stepped on the keel in keeping with Shannon's 30 year reputation for bullet proof construction and safety standards.
There are many other boats, both monohulls and multihulls (catamarans) of similar size that claim shoal draft. They all require lowering deep centerboards or dagger-boards in order to actually sail in any direction except downwind. The sailing draft of these designs is considerably deeper than the published board up draft numbers. The windward and reaching sailing performance of these with the appendages pulled up is dismal. Shoalsailor owners are enjoying unparalleled boating satisfaction plus the opportunity to boldly go where no sailboat of comparable size has ever gone before.

AccommodationsFor over three decades, Shannon has set the standard for beautiful fit and finish, inside and out. The bulkheads are expertly varnished, her cabin sole is teak and holly, her headliner is classic white gloss strakes.
The Shoalsailor features a three cabin layout with two private staterooms. There is a dinette table that may convert to a berth. Each cabin has cedar lined hanging lockers and drawer storage, overhead opening hatches for excellent light and ventilation.
The Shoalsailor has a roomy, full-sized head aft that is ventilated by an opening port and overhead opening hatch. Inside the head is a large shower, large wet locker, medicine cabinet and sink vanity with a Corian counter top.
The galley is packed with storage and has Corian counter tops, a propane stove, microwave/convection oven, large sink, pot locker, dish storage, food pantry and plenty of shelves.
The 12 volt and 110 volt electrical distribution panel is aft of the galley above the front opening refrigerator/freezer.

Sails and RiggingThe Shannon Scutter rig was developed by Walter Schultz in 1995 as a milestone in his quest to perfect shot-handed sailing. A genoa can only be successfully reefed to about 30% before the sail loses shape and becomes worthless with no drive into the wind. On the Shannon Scutter rig, a real working jib is planced on the bowsprit forward of the genoa. By placing the jib forward, helm is reduced and the high cut jib will easily tack through the slot in front of the genoa. A Shannon is sailed normally with the genoa up to winds of about 20 nknots. When the wind increases, the genoa is reefed (a 130% genoa becomes approximately a 100% genoa). If the wind climbs the reefed genoa is completely furled, and the working jib is rolled out. If necessary in true storm conditions, the working jib can also be reefed by 30% to become an effective heavy weather jib. The Shannon Scutter rig creates four usable headsail combinations all available without leaving the cockpit. Thus, all sails, headsails and mainsail can be set, reefed and furled by one person from the cockpit and can be tacked easily unlike a traditional cutter rig.
