Structure The Oyster 55 hull is molded in GRP from female molds built by Oyster in their own facility under the designer's supervision, ensuring a smooth accurate finish. The hull and deck structure are molded to the designers spec in a Lloyds' approved facility under controlled conditions. The hull is hand laminated and all hull/deck moldings are produced using Lloyds' approved gelcoat and laminating resign.
DECK STRUCTURE
The deck structure is molded in GRP with a balsa core for strength and insulation. In load bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood for additional strength, and all load bearing fittings have aluminum backing plates. Within the foredeck is a recessed locker for anchor chain storage, which is fitted with hinged lids (port/starboard). Within the aft deck there is a large storage locker for the gas bottles w/ overboard drain to starboard. A large hatch, center mounted on the aft deck, gives access to the full width, very large lazarette locker. Electrical System The DC electrical supply is 24 volt, and a bank of (8) 6 volt 20 hour rated batteries give 230 Amp hours (approx) at 24 volts for the domestic supply. These batteries are heavy duty deep cycle type.
Power from an 88 Amp hour (approx) battery bank of 12 volt batteries is devoted to main engine/generator starting.
All batteries are positively secured against inversion in case of knock down. The domestic batteries have positive forced gas extraction to the exterior of the vessel via a 2.75" spark proof fan. The engine and the generator starting battery gas is extracted via ducting to the exterior of the vessel.
Charging of the batteries from the engine is via the 40 amp alternator and a diode isolator. There is also a Mastervolt inverter charger (new 2010) located under the settee in the main salon.
All electrics are connected to appropriately sized circuit breakers that are incorporated into the main breaker panels mounted to the aft bulkhead behind the navigation station in the main salon.
Mains AC ring main, with (3) double, 3-pin Clipsal sockets in beige finish, located in the main saloon, aft cabin and galley.
