Catalina 36 Mk II

The Catalina 36 is one of the most popular boats of this size with over 3,000 built between 1982-2006. The original version (MK I) was replaced in 1995 by the MK II which has has a larger cockpit and a more roomy and comfortable quarter berth cabin. With the MK II, Catalina also moved to using vinylester rather than polyester resins in the outer layers to reduce osmotic blistering.

The 36 Mk II was designed with couples and families in mind, who primarily weekend and vacation cruise but may be planning some extended cruising. It is a comfortable boat and offers very good performance in all points of wind. She is stable and easily enough sailed single- lor light-handed, particularly with the installed autopilot.

Like most modern production boats, the 36MKII has a fairly flat sheer, low-profile cabin and short overhangs. Beam is carried well aft to accommodate a very spacious queen berth in the aft cabin.

The Catalina 36 is widely regarded as a safe, comfortable cruiser with all of the necessary features and creature comforts.� 

Accommodations

Key features include:�

• Spacious head with sit-down shower to port. Macerator included.

• Main saloon with L-shaped dinette to port and two seats separated by small table to starboard
• Aft galley on the port side with double stainless steel sink, two burner stove and oven, top loading icebox and decent storage. There is an Adler Barbor fridge unit installed, but it is believed to be non-functional at this time.

• Aft cabin with mammoth queen berth and storage

The saloon measures 13� 4� long from the companionway to the forward stateroom, and maximum headroom is 6� 5�. The combination of light- colored composite countertops and wood cabinetry, opening ports and hatches, and two portlights in the hull contribute to a sense of spaciousness.

The galley is located to port at the foot of the companionway, aft of a U-shaped dinette that seats four. (An L-shaped dinette with fold-down table also is available.) Forward to port is the head, which can be accessed from the saloon or the forward stateroom. The V-berth measures 90� wide at the head and 84� on centerline.

A second stateroom below the cockpit is accessed from the starboard quarter, featuring a huge queen berth. This bunk is a whopping 78� wide and 80� long. A hanging locker is ample, plus storage in four drawers.

The nav station sits opposite the galley, aft of two heavily cushioned seats located to either side of a 25� x 30� game table that can double as a dining table or be converted to a 6� 2� long berth. Each chair has storage in its base.

The galley is U-shaped with a three-burner propane stove and oven. The counter is 60� long and 18� wide with double stainless sinks.

The 22� x 26� chart table is convenient for laptop work or charting your next anchorage.

Construction

Catalinas are assembled from three principal moldingsââ?¬â??the hull, deck and an interior liner that incorporates the cabin sole and much of the ââ?¬Å?furniture.ââ?¬ï¿½ Butler was an early (possibly the first in the US) proponent of this time-saving method.

The hand-laid hull is solid fiberglass. Vinylester resin is used on the outer plies, underneath the gelcoat, because it better resists osmotic blistering than polyester. The balance of the laminate consists of alternating layers of 7.5-ounce cloth, 24-ounce roving and 1.5-ounce chopped strand mat (CSM).

Hull thickness is 1� at the centerline and 5/8� on bottom panels.

The liner is bonded to the hull at all intersections using X-mat tape. Bulkheads are bedded in 3M 5200 and bolted or screwed to the liner.

The hand-laid deck is cored with Baltec AL 600 end-grain balsa; decks on earlier versions were cored with plywood.

The hull/deck joint is an overlapping flange bonded with a fiberglass-reinforced polyester mix and secured with 1/4� bolts on 6� centers.

The loads from the lower shrouds are transferred to the hull via tie rods fastened to the chainplates on top and to reinforced areas of the hull at bottom. A common complaint among owners responding to a PS survey is that chainplates leak and require annual inspection or rebedding.

Deck hardware is fastened with machine screws to drilled and tapped aluminum plates bedded in the deck laminate. This method produces a secure fit and avoids dimples on the ceiling of the interior.

The keel is lead with 2% antimony and installed with type 316 stainless steel keel bolts. The wing keel weighs 6,670 pounds.

Sails & Rigging

The sails appear to be crisp and in very good condition. The main sail cover will need repair or replacement in the not too distant future.

Running rigging seems solid.

Because the 36MKII was designed for cruising by couples and families with children, the deck layout is organized for shorthanded sailing.

The anodized mast is manufactured by Catalina. The main is rigged with Lazy Jacks.

A roller furling is installed on the headsail.

The wire upper shrouds and stays are 5/16â�³; lower shrouds are 1/4â�³. A split backstay is equipped with adjustable turnbuckles.� 

Primary winches are self-tailing, chromed-bronze Lewmar 48s; halyard winches are self-tailing Lewmar 30s.� 

The tracks for jib and genoa cars are located inboard, near the cabin sides, and outboard on the toerail.

The Autohelm autopilot makes skippering easy, even light-handed.

Deck & Hull

The hull design includes a swept back delta wing keel with 4�5� draft, which is perfect for most of the waters around Florida and the Bahamas.

The anchor locker houses two 35-pound anchors and rode, and is designed for installation of a saltwater washdown hose. An electric windlass mounted in the anchor locker is included.

Ten-inch mooring cleats are located at the bow and stern.

The 8� 8� cockpit is comfortable under sail and at dockside and includes port & starboard cushions and a cocktail table.

Light and ventilation belowdecks are provided by Lewmar hatches located on the bow, amidships, and over the galley and nav station.� 

A storage area spans the stern and provides access to the steering gear. A propane locker is located to port in the stern and vented overboard. There is a starboard laz locker as well and it is spacious for dock lines & fenders. The port sail locker has adequate space for the storage of fenders & dock lines.

The Catalina 36 has always been one of my favorite cruisers. It has always seemed to be the perfect blend of comfort and performance, and is designed to perfectly suit a couple couples or a small family for spacious, safe cruising. Easily adaptable to your sailing objectives, it's a great value in a mid-sized cruiser.

I am 6'2" and so I'm not comfortable moving about inside small boats, but the headroom in the Catalina 36 is 6'5", and feels very spacious. The starboard salon seats with the small game / cocktail table between is a highlight for entertaining guests, as well as for a quick breakfast before moving on to your next island adventure.

The bones are solid with 'Passage'. The important bits are in good shape: engine, sails, rigging, deck & hull. The boat has suffered a bit in the last year or two, but all issues are either inconsequential or easily squared away by any new attentive owner with very modest skills.�

The main cabin and all interior teak has the warmth and durability only obtained with multiple coats of varnish. The 36 has stainless steel hand rails and anodized spars, reducing maintenance on deck and extending the sailing season.

Engine access is excellent, with the one-piece, insulated enclosure removed.

The hull is rugged, hand-laminated, solid fiberglass; the keel is lead with integrally cast stainless steel bolts. The mast is stepped through the deck on the keel and has inline spreaders and fore and aft lower shrouds, a sturdy arrangement that is easy to tune.
