Interior

  Starting in the bow is the owner's cabin with a generous full pullman berth to port. Located below the berth are four storage drawers and  across from the berth is a large hanging locker with a built in Dickinson radiator.  Forward of the hanging locker is a hot/ cold pressurized stainless steel sink, featuring outboard storage above and below the sink.

  Forward of the berth on the port side is the en-suite head. The head features a Lavac electric toilet, a hand held cold/hot pressurized shower, and a dowel to convert the space into a wet locker. Outboard of the head is a large storage space.

  The interior living space of Szel is as spacious and comfortable as her outside. Just aft of the owner's cabin is the salon. With an L-shaped settee to port and a bench to starboard there is comfortable seating for 8. Outboard of the settees are large deep bookshelves, and overhead are two opening hatches, with two port-lights to starboard and port.

Szel has a very large Galley, and is well laid out for easy off shore cooking. It features a large refrigeration and freezer system, with a deep stainless steel sink and a force 10 propane stove. With overhead lighting through out and many opening ports she is well lit and ventilated.

  Aft of the navigation station is a midship head. It features a stainless steel hot/cold sink with a hand held shower nozzle. There is storage outboard of the toilet and beneath the sink.

Aft of the head and galley are two cabins. The starboard aft cabin features a full sized berth. There is drawer storage located below the berth with a hanging locker to port, and a hot/ cold pressurized sink. Over the sink area are your heat controls and a GFCI outlet.

With a large enclosed pilothouse, Szel can be sailed with hand held auto pilot controls. Giving her the ability to be sailed in any weather with your comfort and safety in mind.

Szel was our home for 12 years.  Before we retired we sailed a lot in Maine and took short summer cruises to Bermuda, Newfoundland, The Canadian Maritimes, and the East Coast from Florida to Maine. When we retired in 2007 we headed for the Azores without a specific plan for what came next.

Guy had followed Dashewââ?¬â?¢s design of this boat for a number of years, and it was definitely his choice for long distance cruising.  I have to admit to be being less than enthusiastic initially!  But, boy am I glad we picked this boat.

For me, sustained ocean cruising (years and years if you are lucky!) is a combination of safe passage-making and living comfortably on board.  In a nutshell hereââ?¬â?¢s what I came to love about this boat:

Safety:  She is designed for a couple to manage (this was REALLY important to us).  She has a big, secure aft cockpit and safe foredeck for sail handling. Her size makes her a stable platform at sea. This boat handled every condition we encountered.

Comfort:  Pilot House! Pilot House! Pilot House! We lived there in good weather.  On watch in bad conditions we could stay protected, dry, and out of the thrash.  Down below there is lots of light and lots of air and lots of space.

Speed:   With close to 1,000 sq. ft. of main the boat has potential to carry a lot of speed.  But I am not a racer at heart.  More important to me is her ability to settle into an easy pace and still rack up the miles day after day. 

Fun:  The cruising community is unbelievably fun and interesting.  Meeting new friends is at the very heart of voyaging.  In remote island locations you are not just a casual visitor, but are invited to share in the life of the community. There is no way to be anonymous on a tiny island! We loved to meet local families, enjoy their food, and visit their homes and schools.  And in turn, islanders were curious about our boat and our life on board.  Szel is a wonderful boat to share with friends.

 The big trip was a remarkable five years.  I love this boat for bringing us great sailing adventures and the many pleasures and daily surprises of living in different cultures. If youââ?¬â?¢ve got a hankering, GET OUT THERE!- Karen

It is both refreshing and unusual when you make a purchase that actually lives up to the hype.  If you are interested in a Sundeer 64, you have probably looked at the designer Steven Dashewââ?¬â?¢s web site Set Sail.com.  Possibly you have also Googled up Szel, Sundeer 64 and found Steveââ?¬â?¢s ââ?¬Å?A Blast from the Past", a photo set featuring Szel.  You might have also found information about and photos of Raven, another a Cutter version of the 64.  Raven was sold a few years back, but before she sold the owners created an excellent Web site.  For my wife, Karen, and for me, Szel has met our expectations and safely carried our mom and pop team on many interesting ocean voyages.

 Before I retired my summer vacations were short and sweet.  It was difficult to link more than two consecutive weeks of vacation time so our voyages were defined by what could be accomplished in 16 days.  If  the target was Kittery, Maine to Bermuda we would plan on setting sail on a Friday night, five days down, five days on the island, five days back, work on Monday.   The characteristics of a long waterline, easily driven hull, large semi balanced rudder, well thought out sail plan, powerful engine, and large fuel capacity combined with a comfortable deck house made for easy going ocean passages.  We were never ââ?¬Å?weââ?¬â?¢re going for the recordââ?¬ï¿½ sailors.   We organized our sail plan for the gusts not the lulls.  We frequently put a reef in the main at night; just because. The combination of a genoa and a staysail mounted on Profurl rollers and serviced by an electric winch helped to limit time on the foredeck at sea and dial up or down the fore triangle with ease. We still sailed plenty fast, but we could spend our time reading, cooking, and napping instead of hanging on.  When we arrived at our destination we were ready to enjoy the sites and activities of the island we were visiting.

During the working years we would alternate programs: one year the vacation was devoted to a voyage the next year the vacation was devoted to cruising on the coast of Maine.  If you have not experienced the coast of Maine it is a treasure not to be missed.  The abundance of protected anchorages and breath taking scenery is rarely found outside of Maine.  Szelââ?¬â?¢s powerful windlass and 80kg anchor makes childââ?¬â?¢s play out of the daily routine of anchoring and getting underway.  The cockpit and on deck areas are ideal for sunning, swimming, and sightseeing.  The large refrigerator and freezer make provisioning easy.  The large solar cells and ample battery capacity cut generator time to an hour a day.  The large Main Saloon coupled with the on deck space is ideal for entertaining. 

Szel is not an around-the-buoys racer.  She is a fast and sea kindly ocean cruiser. To open more anchorages and cruising grounds around the world the keel was kept short.  When tacking up island passages she still feels good and moves right along, but the racing crowd would quickly notice that she will not foot to windward the way a J160 does.  On the other hand, to even the score we could sometimes find short cuts through shallow passages from which the racing or race/cruisers were excluded.  When the wind is dying or the weather threatens the 160 hp Yanmar diesel can make some serious tracks.  A Kiwi friend once expressed that it was too bad to resort to the engine while on passage; at the time I thought to myself it was nice to have the option.

 Finally in 2007 Karen and I embarked on a 5 year voyage that took us twice across the Atlantic through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific.  We chose not to have guests so as to maximize our freedom to let the trip evolve.  We enjoyed sailing without the advantages or hassles of crew or guests.  We never found sailing shorthanded to be a challenge.  We enjoyed our time at sea, and we enjoyed immersion into the life and culture of the islands we visited.  We found the Pacific to be a universally welcoming place where we could frequently find small repair jobs that we could do for the locals to justify our presence.  We carried school supplies for the kids and drug store reading glasses for adults.  We had extra food supplies and old boat gear that we dispensed where we found a need.  We discovered the true joy of long distance cruising is that you live your life in the presence of people who are busy living their lives.  In some locations you become a ceremonial member of the village. One does not become a local, but you do have the opportunity to get a sense of what life is like for the people of the island.
