General Information
"Our Independence" is a 1988 Independence 45 by Hans Christian. The Independence 45s are one of those special boats that are rarely found for sale. At the dock, the Independence is a standout with her large bow and distinctive pilothouse. The Independence 45 is a sturdy raised pilothouse trawler intended for those who take their cruising seriously. She's built on a semi-displacement hull with moderate beam, hard aft chines to reduce roll (rather than rounded bilges common to most displacement designs), and a long, prop-protecting keel. The current owners have maintained her in excellent condition and she is equipped and ready to start cruising. She is full of all the items you would expect for a properly outfitted vessel and has two staterooms, two full heads, nicely organized galley, large salon and pilothouse. She can sleep 4 to 7 people comfortably. Some of her options include a solid Burmese Teak and marble interior, complete up- to- date electronics suite; twin Ford Lehman Super 135 diesels, an upper helm,a Nautical Structures davit, and Stainless-steel fuel and water tanks.
LayoutSALON AND DINETTE
The main salon is full beam with overly large windows to give the impression of a much larger boat. The windows that are spaced across the aft end of the salon open to permit a full breeze to flow through the boat. There are more hatches and port-lights forward so you have very good ventilation throughout the boat. There are drapes for the aft windows and mini-blinds with cornice boards for the extra large side windows. The "U" shaped dinette area with teak table is to port. Under the dinette cushions are nine storage lockers. This adds a lot of space for storing items during extended cruising. To starboard, is a large couch, which pulls out to make a double bed. There are two storage cabinets on either side of the couch as well as storage under and behind the couch.
GALLEY
Forward of the dinette area is the galley. There is a SeaWard Princess 3 burner propane range with oven, and a maple cutting board for additional counter space. The 12vdc/120vac Norcold refrigerator was new in 2008. There is a microwave oven above the range. A double stainless sink makes food preparation very easy. The countertops are 1" thick marble. There are several louvered cabinet doors, which give the galley a distinctive nautical appearance. Unlike many other boats that have a headliner of vinyl or cloth, the overhead of the whole boat is wood paneled with a tongue and groove look in white paint. This is the authentic traditional salty look.
GUEST STATEROOM
From the Salon there are four steps down and forward to access the staterooms. The guest stateroom is to port with a double berth that has 4 storage drawers beneath. There is a hanging locker and overheard storage compartment. Most unusual about the guest stateroom is that is has a sink with marble counter top, storage below and a mirrored vanity cabinet above. The sliding pocket door provides privacy.
GUEST HEAD
The guest head is to starboard directly across from the guest stateroom. It has a stainless sink set in a marble countertop with a mirrored vanity cabinet above. There is a nice separate tiled shower. The SeaLand Marine Traveler Toilet 911-M28 has its' own 8 gal holding tank and an electric pump to transfer into the main holding tank, or overboard. There is a hanging locker and lots of other storage cabinets. The sliding pocket door provides privacy.
MASTER STATEROOM WITH MASTER HEAD
Forward is the master stateroom with a centerline queen berth. There are port and starboard hanging lockers, and other storage compartments. The deck prisms, side portlights, and 2 large offshore overhead hatches let in a lot of natural light and airflow. The Master Head has a marble sink top with stainless sink, mirrored vanity cabinet, separate tiled shower and SeaLand Marine Traveler Toilet 911-M28 with its' own 8 gal holding tank that pumps into the main holding tank, or overboard.
PILOTHOUSE
Only a few steps up from the salon is the pilothouse. The bench seat with teak table makes a great place to track the course with paper charts. Also it is a great view when having lunch. The electronics and navigation equipment have been continuously upgraded. The engine and transmission controls are traditional cable for ease of maintenance. The gauges for the engines are center line in front of the wheel. There are two large offshore hatches overhead for ventilation and light. The pilothouse has several windows for good visibility and ventilation. The port and starboard side doors give easy access to the upper aft deck, and forward deck. The windows and doors have light filtering Textilene snap on screening for UV protection when at the dock or anchor. The pilothouse is the command station so the underway operations are controlled from here. There are duplicate controls and gauges at the upper deck helm station.
DECK/HULL/GROUND TACKLE
The forward deck of this long-range coastal cruiser had wide walking areas and high bulwarks. There are 1.25 inch stainless rails for safety. The aft cockpit is covered with teak decking and a large centerline hatch opens to provide access to the huge lazarette. The upper deck gives the cockpit an overhang for rain and sun shelter. A big transom door gives access to the wide swim platform. There are six stainless steel dorades for ventilation.
