Owner's Remarks
The original owners of NAARDEN were from Michigan. The boat's was christened ANNAKA. They contracted with McCurdy & Rhodes to modify one of its stock designs to make it a cutter rig with oversized winches. The Habbeke Shipyard in the Netherlands was selected to build the aluminum vessel. I have the original drawings and spec sheets with interesting owner/designer notations.
From what I�ve heard, after the boat was launched in 1987 and husband and wife sailed around the world over several years making a few modifications (e.g. rearranged the settee area in Asia) along the way.
A Canadian couple who once lived in Newport purchased the boat and renamed it AURORA. I do not know when it was purchased but would estimate in the mid-1990�s and moved it to the Alden Yard in Portsmouth, RI. As I recall, the new owners sailed it to Bermuda and Nova Scotia, also doing a lot of coastal cruising. As the owners became grandparents, they had less time for sailing.
I purchased the boat in May, 2002. It had just been professionally painted. In the pre-sale survey as we were inspecting the hull, the surveyor said, ââ?¬Å?Whoever built this boat really knew what they were doing.ââ?¬ï¿½ Other things that attest to the Habbeke Shipyard workmanship were a lot of thoughtful considerations such as a totally isolated electrical system. When I hauled the boat at Newport Shipyard in 2003 for a year of restoration and maintenance, one of the surveyorââ?¬â?¢s recommendations was that we sandblast the hull. The surveyor and workers at NSY were astounded that there no corrosion and that no filler was used - the hull below the waterline was formed and welded absolute fair!
The survey also indicated that there were a few probable areas of corrosion of the aluminum under the teak decks, probably from storage in the tropics. After assessing the alternatives, I had the teak decks removed by high-pressure water blasting. After replacing the corroded deck area, the deck was painted with non-skid. This turned out to be a good decision. During this time at NSY I replacing the Perkins engine with a new larger Yanmar, cleaned all the tanks and bilges, installed larger holding tanks, a hard bimini and dodgers along with solar panels.
NAARDEN is a very comfortable, reliable and sea-kindly boat.
AccommodationsNAARDEN's design as a center cockpit enables private fore and aft cabins. It�s interior is spacious, comfortable and bright; which, is also warm with woodwork throughout. Coming down the companionway you will find the U shaped galley to port and navigation station to starboard. Forward is the large salon with dinette table to port and settee to starboard. Continuing forward to the V Berth stateroom is the forward head to port and hanging lockers to starboard. Forward of the V berth cabin is a large bow storage area. Moving aft on the boat and past the navigation station is a passageway to the aft stateroom that has storage and great access to the engine room. The aft stateroom has two double berths, an ensuite head and private companionway to aft deck.
