Accommodations
CANDELA has a standard Hinckley Pilot layout. She sleeps 5 in 2 cabins with a very spacious cockpit.
Beginning at the bow she has a large forepeake locker for storage of her anchor rodes. This locker has a cowl vent above and louvers in the doors on the aft bulkhead for maximum ventilation.
Next aft is the owners forward V-berth stateroom. This stateroom has two berths with a filler cushion to make it into one large double berth. There are varnished mahogany ceiling planks outboard of the berths and one full-length storage shelf on each side above the berths. She has 4 storage compartments under the berths and a seat is located on centerline between the berths. The hanging locker is aft to starboard. This stateroom has 3 port lights (one in the forward end of the trunk cabin) and one large deck hatch, which provide excellent natural light.
Moving aft the head is located on the port side. Opposite to starboard is a large hanging locker. The main cabin sleeps 3. There is a pilot berth and an extension settee berth to port and a wide settee berth to starboard with storage shelves and lockers above and outboard. Also there are 3 drawers located under each of the 3 berths. The dining table is mounted on the forward bulkhead and it folds down when needed. This arrangement was very popular on most of the smaller traditional sailboats because it provided maximum floor space, which was essential in these older classic boats. Also mounted on the forward port bulkhead outboard of the table is a lovely brass and stainless steel propane fired cabin heater. This does an excellent job of warming up this cozy cabin on a damp or cold day.
The galley is located at the aft end of the main cabin with the stove and sink located to port. The ice box/refrigerator space is located to starboard and the top does double duty as both a nav station and additional galley counter space. The companionway ladder to the cockpit is located on centerline.
The engine space is under the cockpit sole. Daily access is gained via removal of the companionway ladder. For better overall access to the sides and aft end of the engine you can get to it via the two large sail lockers which are located under the two cockpit seats.
CANDELA, like most of the newer Pilots has pedestal mounted wheel steering located at the aft end of the cockpit versus a tiller. The roller bearing mainsheet traveler is located on the aft athwartship cockpit coaming immediately aft of the stern seat. Just aft of the traveler are two hatches on the stern deck. The forward most one houses the propane locker with two 20lb propane tanks. The aft one provides access to the lazarette storage space.
CANDELAââ?¬â?¢s cabin has a very spacious feeling because of her white ââ?¬Å?Herreshoffââ?¬ï¿½ style interior finish. This pilot also has white as the interior finish on the inside of the trunk cabin around all of the ports and dead lights. The cabin sole is varnished teak and holly. There are no dirty and dark old mahogany bulkheads in this Pilot!!
Hull & Deck
The Hinckley Pilot is built with a solid fiberglass hull. This is great, strong, simple construction and it eliminates any concerns about wet core or delamination between the core material and the inner or outer fiberglass skins.
The real plus to the Pilot over the later/newer Hinckleys is the fact that her deck also has no core material! She has a solid fiberglass deck like many other smaller early fiberglass sloops where weight was not important due to hull shape and other factors. Many newer glass sloops have balsa core decks with wet cores that have been virtually condemned by surveyors. That will not happen with a Hinckley Pilot.
Her hull is Stars and Stripes awlgrip blue with gold cove stripe, white boottop and a red bottom. She has 7 port lights (1 opening) and 4 larger dead lights at the aft end of the trunk cabin. She also has 2 large deck hatches and 2 teak dorade boxes with stainless steel cowl vents and stainless steel guards. She has one additional cowl vent over the anchor rode forepeake locker for additional ventilation.
CANDELA has all varnished exterior teak trim (toe rails, cockpit coamings, handrails, eyebrow moldings, etc.) It has all been yard maintained and it is all in excellent condition. She has a ââ?¬Å?Herreshoffââ?¬ï¿½ interior with all white bulkheads and varnished mahogany joinerwork.
CANDELA has single 24ââ?¬ï¿½ high life lines with stainless steel bow and stern pulpits and stainless steel stanchions. There are two gates in the lifelines ââ?¬â?? one port and one starboard.
