70' John Alden Hawksbill Motor Sailor

John Alden designed the Hawksbill Motor Sailor as a modern gentlemen’s ocean going power cruiser and Lyman Morse built Arabella in 1970 to be strong and safe at sea. She is one of only two fiberglass Hawksbills ever built. Three others were built out of wood before fiberglass was available.

Arabella has been completely rebuilt and customized in 2012-2013 by the current owner. This rare world cruiser was designed to handle rough seas and will take new owners around 4,000 nautical miles on 1 tank of fuel. Her one inch solid fiberglass hull with full keel with protected rudder keeps the owners safe and the 185 HP Cummins diesel with 30” 4 bladed prop will push this 30 ton vessel at 9-10 knots all day long. Both helm stations offer full electronics and full protected comfort for captain and crew. Her huge salon with beautifully varnished teak, huge tinted windows for all around light and curtains for privacy, new LED lighting and Ruppe floor covering will make any owner comfortable living aboard. The L- shaped settee is getting reupholstered to keep the interior looking new. Forward of the salon and down a few steps is a full galley with everything you need to cook up a storm with abundant storage lockers and counter tops. One of the nicer features of the Hawksbill is that the salon flows into the cockpit extending your living space. Both sails are roller furling with 646 square feet of surface and were designed strictly as secondary propulsion to aid in steadying emergencies in bad weather and for helping out the engine on long passages. It has been said that she is not to be considered a motor sailor, but rather a cruiser capable of handling long distances on bumpy oceans while only burning 5.25 gallons per hour at cruising speed.
