- Two settee berths
CONTAGIOUS is a 1969 Hinckley Bermuda 40 yawl.  She has a standard interior layout. She has a keel / centerboard underbody with a 4 foot 9 inch draft board up. She sleeps six individuals in the main cabin and the owners forward stateroom. CONTAGIOUS was purchased by the prior owner in 2003 and at that time the boat was trucked to a boat yard where she underwent a complete refit for a 14 month period in 2003-2004. During the time of this refit her hull was re-AWLgripped, her bottom was stripped down to bare fiberglass then coated with Interprotect barrier coat and then the bottom was painted.
The exterior teak work was stripped down to bare wood and then revarnished with ten coats. The nonskid on the deck was ground down to a smooth surface. The nonskid areas of the deck were re-gelcoated with a swirl nonskid pattern. After that the decks were AWLgripped with a light gray color. The cabin trunk was AWLgripped snow white, the hull AWLgripped Matterhorn white. The main and mizzenmast were sanded down and AWLgripped Matterhorn white. The main boom was replaced with the new boom in 2005. Also during this refit the bow and stern pulpits were removed. Two new stainless steel pulpits were manufactured to duplicate the original bow and stern pulpits and they were re-installed.
New spreaders were installed on the masts. The running lights, which had been incorporated in the hull, were removed. LED lights were then installed at the top of the double rail stainless steel bow pulpit.
As part of the refit a new 42hp diesel engine was installed and a new stainless steel fuel tank was installed. The interior of the yacht was refinished with a Herreshoff style interior. In other words, all of the bulkheads were painted white and all of the moldings remained varnished mahogany. At this same time 27 pieces of deck hardware were removed, re-chromed and re-installed.
Under current owner since 2011 she has spent her life summer cruising and day sailing in New England. 8 months of the year she has been in inside heated storage. during that time she has continued to receive extensive upgrading including re-finishing the decks, new hull paint, painting of the masts and booms, complete re-wiring, new waste system, many new pieces of electronics and canvas and much more. These more recent upgrades are highlighted under "Upgrade History"
Vessel Walk ThruCONTAGIOUS has the standard Hinckley Bermuda 40 interior, which was common to all these boats from the original construction in the early 60s to sometime in the mid 80s when there were slight modifications made to the interior.
Beginning at the bow this yacht has a large forepeak storage area for the anchor chain and rodes. This area is divided into two sections so the two rodes will remain separate.
Immediate aft of this bulkhead is the Stateroom. This is a V-berth arrangement that sleeps two people comfortably. In this cabin there are four drawers located underneath the V-berth and then there is a chest of drawers located to port immediately aft of the port berth. On the starboard side aft of the starboard berth there are 2 large, spacious hanging lockers. There are shelves above both of the berths so there is good storage located throughout this cabin. In the forward stateroom there are three port lights. There is one on either side and one in the forward end of the trunk cabin, which is a lovely feature commonly found on older yachts but not usually found on new vessels. There is also a large opening hatch at the top of the trunk cabin area, which provides excellent ventilation and extra light into this cabin.
Next aft on the port side is the head, which has a recent Corian countertop with sink.  There is good storage in the two lockers outboard and above the toilet. Additional storage is underneath the sink counter. Opposite the head to starboard is another storage locker, which has numerous shelves and provides excellent storage. Above that and just forward of the starboard pilot berth there is a small locker that has a key to secure valuables, etc.
Moving into the main cabin there are two pilot berths outboard and two settee/extension berths right below them. The upholstery is all new khaki Ultrasuede. Because all of the tanks on the Bermuda 40 are located in the bilge area of the yacht, there is extra storage in the form of drawers and lockers under both the pilot berths and under the settee berths. The table is located on centerline and it is made up in two pieces. Part of the table is permanently mounted and has two small drop leafs. There is another section of the table that folds forward on the forward bulkhead so there is more floor space when the table is not being used. Again in this area the drawers and bunk faces are all gloss varnished mahogany. The ceiling pieces outboard are all gloss varnished mahogany. The athwartship bulkheads are all painted white.
Aft most is the Galley with the refrigerator space to starboard, which doubles as a nav table. This is a common arrangement found in not only the Bermuda 40s but also a lot of the popular sailboats of this particular vintage. There are electronics located above and outboard of the stainless steel refrigeration area, which has electric SeaFrost refrigeration installed 2015. Just aft of the refrigeration/nav table is a small area for hanging foul weather gear. In this area there is also the main 12-volt electrical panel and main battery switches.
On the port side, opposite the refrigerator space is the remaining area of the galley. This consists of a 3-burner stainless steel Shipmate stove that is located forward and outboard. The sink and main counter area runs athwartship aft of the stove. This area has new Corian countertops, which were installed in 2009. Also new is a deep stainless steel sink with a single lever control for the hot and cold water. Because the new Vetus 42hp diesel engine has a lower profile than the original Westerbeke engine that was installed in all the Bermuda 40s, this owner was able to put a deeper sink in the counter area because of this lower profile. This is a single rounded sink. There is additional storage for dishes, glasses, etc. and food stuff in the locker area just above and outboard of the stove and also just aft of the sink area.
Access to the engine is gained by a large locker door on this aft bulkhead immediately under the sink. The hot water tank is outboard of the engine on the port side and can also be accessed via this doorway. For more complete access to the engine space the three companionway steps are removable.
It should be noted on that the interior side of the vertical trunk cabin has been painted out white where it was originally varnished mahogany. This makes for a yacht that is much brighter and airier on the inside and also makes the boat seem larger. PRINCESS has seven small ports in the trunk cabin; one in the head area is an opening port. There are also two fixed large dead lights at the aft end of this trunk cabin area on each side.
All of the 12-volt lighting was new in 2004 and a new 110-volt electrical panel was installed. There is also a Galvanic isolator and a DynaPlate ground plate located on the exterior of the hull. The two dorade vents on top of the trunk cabin bring in ventilation to the head area and to the main cabin area. There is a flush vent located on the foredeck immediately aft of the bow cleats. The cowl vent that screws into this deck plate is meant for use in port and should be removed and stored away with the deck plate replaced while the vessel is underway.

Cockpit
One of the features that made the Bermuda 40 successful was the large spacious cockpit. The cockpit seats are long and wide. It is easy for six people to sit in the cockpit. The seats are wide enough so you can either sleep here while taking an afternoon nap or for sleeping out under the stars. There are two large sail lockers located underneath the cockpit seats on both the port and starboard sides.
Moving to the aft deck there are three teak hatches. These varnished hatches allow access to the propane storage area, which is immediately aft of the cockpit coaming. All the way aft the large hatch provides access to the remaining lazarette area of the vessel, which is quite spacious and allows for storage of fenders, lines, etc.
Finally the dodger itself was redesigned and replaced in 2012. The present dodger has a wider base than the standard Bermuda 40 dodger and it provides better protection for anyone located in the cockpit. This dodger also has permanent stainless steel braces, rather than canvas straps, which hold it aft in its proper position. There is also a handrail not only on the aft end of the dodger but also an extension of that which provides a grab hold on the side of the dodger, which one can use when moving in and out of the cockpit.
Sails & RiggingKeel stepped aluminum masts and booms with 1X19 stainless steel wire rigging.  The masts and booms were re-awlgripped by the current owner in 2012 and the mainmast was given all new stainless steel standing rigging.

Broker's Comments and Upgrade HistoryUnder the current and prior owner this exceptional Hinckley Bermuda 40 has had a complete refit including engine, all systems, all finishes etc. etc. It would be difficult if not impossible to find a boat that has had this amount of work done. The prior owners cruised her extensively including runs to the Bahamas and the Canadian Maritimes while the current owners have cruised locally and day sailed her such is her versatility.
Between a 2010 and 2015 refit every surface interior and exterior has been refinished though the masts were done somewhat earlier than that, all systems have been replaced. This is essentially a 2004/2015 boat in a 1969 hull. The latter work has all been done while the boat slept 8 months a year at one of the East Coast's finest yard where she was in inside heated storage as she has been throughout her current tenure of ownership which commenced in 2011.
