History of the boat used for the Ocean Challenge Program
Ocean Challenge of Southern California, Inc was started by 4 friends in 1992 that wanted to make a change in the experiences of youth with the violence, drugs and pressures they experience in the inner cities. We setup a program for at-risk youth to gain a positive, exciting and challenging experience while engaged in educational and recreational activities on board a power vessel on the ocean with a highly trained staff of high moral values to emulate appropriate behavior and guidance. We teach basic marine science concepts in oceanography, boating safety, navigation, and a variety of recreational activities including fishing, kayaking, snorkeling and swimming. Most of these activities are done locally in Long Beach and San Pedro with more rewarding trips to Catalina Island with overnight stays on mooring cans and Island campsites.
We have taken 3 rival gangs members camping at Catalina at the same time, Foster Care groups, Boy Scout groups, School classes and Church groups of up to 24 youth and staff. The boat has consistently provided safe excursions to and from Catalina without have a single cancellation for rough seas. In between excursions we have inspections, maintenance and repairs as needed as “safety” is our first priority. The Ocean Challenge vessel has handled it all without a hiccup.
