Accommodations
Enter the companionway stairs with the inlaid non skip pattern to the main salon. To port is a U shaped galley, engine is on centerline beneath the double sink with excellent access from all sides, to starboard is the forward facing nav station with repeater instruments, vhf radio and electric panel. Aft to starboard is a head with separate aft shower. Aft to port is a spacious double berth with generous storage and a small entry way "back door" to the head.
The salon has a port and starboard settee, with ultrasuede fabric and comfortable bolsters for support. The port settee has an extension to make a double berth.
On centerline aft of the keel stepped mast is a butterfly style folding table with bottle storage beneath and port and starboard wings.
Forward is the owner's stateroom with a centerline berth, generous storage, shelves, lockers and drawers, and a small vanity and mirror with sink and pressure water. The skipper can be shaving while the admiral is using the aft head.
And then there's the secret toilet which we seen in a select few Sabre 402's. This extra toilet is hidden underneath the small seat to port and will do in a pinch.
The entire vessel is finished in beautiful cherry wood and the flooring has a holly sole. Generous ventilation with opening ports, overhead hatches and electric fans. There is a tremendous amount of storage for a forty foot boat and excellent capacity tanks for water and fuel.
Builder & DesignerSabre Yachts, South Casco, Maine
Designer; Jim Taylor and the Sabre Design TeamÃ?Â
More information from Sabre YachtsThe Sabre 402 was designed to provide exceptional performances yet be
easily sailed by a couple. In association with Naval Architect Jim Taylor, the
Sabre Design Team wanted to show that cruising need not be
slow and that performance can add considerably to the
enjoyment of a sailing yacht. Boat speed increases the range
and scope of a sailorâs cruising grounds. We wanted to
incorporate the latest in design and construction technology, yet maintain the Sabre reputation for traditional craftsmanship and integrity. First and foremost she had to be a Sabre.
The Sabre 402 has proven to be fast, yet requires little physical effort
to make her perform. She is ruggedly built and incorporates new
technologies such as her carbon fiber rudder post and state-of-the-art
keel designs. She offers greater stability, comfort and security than
other boats in her class.
While part of the challenge was to make her look like the Sabre
models which preceded her, she has, under her traditional
good looks and finish, the heart of a thoroughbred.
The Sabre 402 has met and exceeded all of our expectations, winning
Cruising World Magazines Mid-Size Cruiser and Overall Boat of the
Year Award in 1997.
The Awlgrip finished
Hall spar rig with triple, aft-swept spreaders and Navtec rod
rigging, is the source of power and performance of the Sabre 402.
Chosen for light weight and strength characteristics, a lighter mast reduces heeling angles and pitching, improving performance and adding to comfort
under way.
Genoa tracks are placed well inboard for close sheeting angles and superb
performance sailing to weather. Asecond set of genoa tracks is provided on
the toe rail for wind conditions calling for a more open slot between main
and genoa.
The Sabre 402s cockpit is designed for comfort and security at sea. Unlike
some boats where ââ?¬Å?picnic tablesââ?¬ï¿½ have become the dominant feature of the
cockpit, the crew of the 402 can brace their feet on the leeward cockpit seat.
And this cockpit shape does not steal interior volume from her aft cabin.
The bridge deck at the forward end of the cockpit serves several purposes.
It prevents flooding in the unlikely event that a wave should board the yacht
and it is the best seat in the house in poor weather when used in combination
with a dodger. In the interior of the yacht, it creates the headroom
that allows us to provide a comfortable passageway from the aft cabin
into the head.
The interior of the Sabre 402 is crafted with American cherry
and is coated with Rubbed Effect Varnish, for a finish which
is smooth to the touch and pleasing to the eye.
The main salon is impressive and takes full advantage of the 402's
beam of 13' 4". Deep, comfortable settees are found port and
starboard. The port side converts to a double berth to be used for
occasional guests or as a sea berth while underway. The centerline
drop leaf table can comfortably seat six adults at meal time
making this the center of social activity aboard.
Deep lockers outboard provide ample storage spaces. A large deck
hatch, stainless steel opening ports and large fixed portlights
provide light and ventilation and add a sense of space to this
Forward of the main salon is the master stateroom with it's large
centerline berth. This compartment offers many deep drawers and
lockers for storage of your personal gear. A comfortable seat is located to
port in front of the convenient vanity sink and mirror. A tall, cedar-lined
hanging locker is found to starboard.
A large hatch overhead, two small hatches and two stainless steel ports
provide light and air to this comfortable space. Wood framed screens are
fitted to each of the deck hatches. Traditional ash hull ceilings provide the
hull-side finish and a beautifully sculpted shelf runs around the perimeter of
the berth. Stainless steel reading lights are provided port and starboard
The galley of the Sabre 402 is a pleasure to work in, whether at
the dock or under sail. The U-shaped space provides all the
security needed to work here no matter what the conditions
Laminated wood fiddles prevent food from spilling onto the cabin
sole. Lockers with louvered doors, hand made, dovetailed drawers
and clever storage spaces will easily house all of the provisions that
you have brought along.
A double stainless steel sink with single lever mixing faucet is found
on the centerline, above the engine. Outboard and forward is the
large ice box, comparable in volume to a domestic refrigerator. This
ice box has two top openings as well as a front door.
The gimbaled propane stove and
The chart table aboard the Sabre 402 is large enough to accommodate today's
sophisticated navigation electronics systems or to spread out your paper charts.
The ship's AC and DC electrical systems are displayed and controlled from the custom electrical panel, and the ship's batteries are secured below the chart table seat for easy access and maintenance. This traditional style, forward facing chart table, can truly be put to use while underway unlike those of many of the Sabre 402's contemporaries.
The navigation table seat is a great place for socializing with the cook when meals are being prepared in the galley to port. Drawers below the table provide space for navigation tools, the Sabre tool kit and your yacht's spare parts.
The Sabre 402's interior layout proves that traditional designs are still the best when it comes to comfort and security underway and livability at anchor or dockside
The head compartment of the Sabre 402 is functional and easy to keep. A Corian
countertop surrounds the sink and a fiberglass floor pan makes cleanups a breeze. For ventilation, there is a screened hatch overhead
and opening port in the side deck. Aft of the head is a fully enclosed shower stall
with wet locker outboard. The head can be accessed in complete privacy through a low door to the aft cabin.
The aft cabin of the Sabre 402 is spacious. For many owners, it is a toss up as to whether the aft or the forward cabin is the master stateroom. A wide double berth stretches aft and a full set of lockers and drawers provide storage. A book case faces aft on center line and stainless steel reading lights are just where you would hope to find them. This is a very comfortable and convenient sea berth.
The design of the Sabre 402's cockpit enhances this area. Boats with large cockpit wells and "picnic tables" take volume away from the aft cabin, whereas the sensibly sized cockpit of the Sabre 402 leaves a big volume of space above the berth. The convenient passageway door to the head is made
possible by the design of the high bridge deck.
Sabre's 30 years of experience in designing sailing yachts for sailors shows wherever you look on the Sabre 402. Everything is sized for ease of handling and is placed just where it should be. Control lines are brought aft to the cockpit for halyards, mainsheet, reefing, traveller control and outhaul lines.
The side decks of the Sabre 402 are wide, safe and comfortable. Genoa
sheeting angles are close because of the geometry of the aft swept, triple spreader rig. Unlike some boats which use the "iron genoa" when the wind is on the nose, Sabre 402 owners easily conquer the conditions with tight tacking angles. And with her well balanced helm and 40 inch elk hide wheel, the crew will be fighting over "who gets to steer".
If you are looking for an exceptionally well designed and built sailing yacht, that is fun and easy to sail, then the Sabre 402 may be the one for you. In
the words of Cruising World Magazine's Editor Bernadette
Bernon, "she is a modern classic for years to come".
Awlgrip painted, triple spreader Hall Spar rig with Navtec rod rigging for
optimum sheeting angles and less pitching in a sea way.
s Superior ventilation with (2) large and (6) small deck hatches
plus (10) opening ports. Carbon fiber rudder post reduces weight in the ends of
the hull and reduces pitching. Carbon posts are less susceptible to damage than are stainless steel posts. Ergonomically designed cockpit with bridgedeck
for safety, comfort and convenience. Handcrafted interior built with American
Cherry.
