Walk-Through/Accommodations
Penrhyn, a John G. Alden Offshore 50 built by Cheoy Lee, has a hand-laid fiberglass hull with white topsides, pearl grey trim stripe and black bottom. The deck is Awlgrip LP with the house, cockpit and waterways white and the sanded non-skid pearl grey. The new windows are green UVM laminated glass with full mesh sun covers. The teak handrails, toe-rails house hatches, and cockpit have been taken down to bare wood, brightened and are varnished. There are three aluminum hatches, one over the V-berth, above the amidships cabin and one aft of the cockpit raised LP tank locker. The jib tracks have been replaced with stainless numbered T-tracks.
The decks are wide and uncluttered. Once raised, handling the sails from the cockpit is easily managed and the visibility is good. The cockpit is comfortably over eight feet long. The original wheelbox makes a fine seat for steering with the upgraded 34-inch stainless Edson wheel pedestal. A new 10” Raymarine radar/chart plotter/GPS/depth sounder is mounted at the Edson helm with a Ritchie Globemaster compass. The cockpit has teak grates. The cockpit lockers are huge with lots of storage under the cockpit and additionally behind the raised LPG locker an aluminum hatch accesses the lazarette another storage area. There is a removable custom stainless boarding ladder, extra deep for coming out of the water.
Going down the companionway is access friendly, only three steps down into the deckhouse. The teak interior has been completely taken down to bare wood, brightened and varnished. There are no stains on the cabin sides. The interior paint is white Awlgrip. All areas have headliner except the head and shower.
The galley is ready for a chef with lots of room for every conceivable pot and pan, even room for the KitchenAid and a large rolling area if you’re a serious cook. The pantry lockers are large for long range provisioning. There is a large cold plate 12-volt DC refrigeration unit under the chart table and a two-door AC refrigerator/freezer under the galley counter. Next to that is a covered deep freeze that is all fiberglassed and finished with LP, has a drain, and is ready for a hatch. The stove is a Force 10 with four burners, oven and broiler. In the cabin sole is a built-in wine cellar or a floor safe area that can be bolted down.
The settee table is U-shaped. There is deep, wide storage behind the settee and drawers underneath. It is raised so you can see out of the 13 windows a full 360-degrees. Across from it on the starboard side is a comfortable, pull-out, full-sized berth (all berths are a minimum of 6’5”). Headroom is from 6’6” in the deckhouse, 6’5” amidships, diminishing to 6’ in the V-berth with a hatch overhead. The engine room is below the table and hatches in the cabin sole which makes for easy, accessible servicing.
Going down one step into the amidships cabin is an open living area with four opening ports, a large aluminum hatch above and many custom cabinets, drawers, bookcases and shelves. There are three bunks, one to starboard with all the shelves and bookcases above and to port there are two bunks. The top bunk is a standard single and the lower pulls out to make a comfortable full-sized berth. There is a hanging locker and 14 drawers and lockers in that one area. Going forward on the starboard side through the hallway are two mirrored hanging lockers and six drawers and two cupboards.
The head has been completely refinished. All white surfaces are laminate or Awlgrip LP. The teak doors and trim are varnished and the counter tops are Corian. The new fixtures are chrome. There is a full shower with a bench, shelf, high splash or child tub and a window for added light. An opening port is above the sink and shelf. The VacuFlush head is very efficient, using only one pint of freshwater per flush and a tiny amount of 12-volt power.
The V-berth has a large hanging locker, two large drawers, spacious upper cabinets, shelves and a cabinet with door under a sink set in coral-colored Corian. The V-berth is wide king, but has been made into a queen-sized bed with memory foam. It can easily be returned to king size. Lots of storage under bed. A large aluminum hatch above the bed and four opening ports. Behind the head of the bed is a huge chain locker with double door access, large enough to climb into.
