Accommodations & Layout
The Gulfstar 37 is an extremely spacious family cruiser. This particular Gulfstar 37 sleeps a total of five in the private forward stateroom and the main cabin. Because of her 32’ waterline and 11’10” beam, she has the same interior volume that one would find in the average 40 or 41 footer.
The cockpit on the Gulfstar 37 is very large and has almost the same width at the aft end as the forward end. The hull of the 37’ tapers in very little as she comes aft from the point of maximum beam. This cockpit can accommodate 6 to 8 people very comfortably and is protected by a very significant dodger with long side flaps. The traveler on this particular Gulfstar 37 is located forward of the dodger on top of the cabin house and therefore does not interfere with any of the cockpit seating. The companionway to the main cabin is slightly offset to starboard. The cockpit coamings have varnished teak caps and there are both primary and secondary winches. The primary Lewmar winches are self-tailing.
Down below we begin at the bow where there is a good size forepeake area, which can accommodate two separate anchor rodes. Moving aft, the forward stateroom is probably the largest forward stateroom found in a boat of this size. It has a very spacious V-berth with a chest of drawers immediately aft to starboard and a double hanging locker immediately aft to port with two full-length louver doors on the hanging locker. There are two small storage areas at the after most end of the V-berth. This cabin has its own private entry into the head and there are two opening ports plus a centerline hatch for ventilation into this cabin.
Moving aft the passageway to the main cabin is offset to port. The head is located to starboard and there is a small seat with another double hanging locker opposite to port. The head is done in off white Formica with varnished teak trim and white Formica countertops. This head area is large and easy to clean. There is a dorade vent and one opening port in this head.
The main cabin of the Gulfstar 37’s vary significantly depending on which year it was built between 1976 and 1979. CADENCE, a 1979 model, features the smaller aluminum frame opening ports as well as the forward angled fixed ports at the aft end of the trunk cabin. This cabin has a large table located on the centerline immediately aft of the main mast. There are pull out settee berths to both port and starboard. She has the upper pilot berth located above the starboard settee berth but opposite on the port side. She has two lockers with a bookcase in between, located above the port settee berth. On the forward bulkhead just to starboard of the mast there is a propane cabin heater mounted down low. The table on the Gulfstar 37 is extremely large for a boat of this size and can comfortably accommodate a total of 6 place settings plus serving dishes, etc. Both of the settee berths pull out to make sitting around this drop leaf table very comfortable.
Moving aft to port there is a large U-shaped galley. There are two sinks located on the centerline just adjacent to the companionway ladder. The stove is located outboard to port and the icebox is under the counter at the aft end of the galley. Immediately to starboard of the companionway ladder is the large L-shaped navigator’s station. The AC/DC electrical panel is mounted on the aft bulkhead. Most of the electronics on this 37 are suspended from the overhead under the starboard deck leaving the nav desk itself and there is a separate swivel chair for the navigator. Immediately forward of this nav station and just aft of the starboard settee berth is another hanging locker, which is used as a foul weather locker. This cabin has 3 opening ports, 2 hatches on the cabin top and one dorade vent to ventilate it.
The main cabin of the Gulfstar 37 is so spacious it rivals the space found on most 42 to 44 footers. This cabin is also very bright and airy and has approximately 6’3” headroom. The interior of the Gulfstar 37 is all satin finished varnished teak and the cabin sole is varnished teak and holly. The interior cushions onboard CADENCE are a light green in color and they are complimented by white curtains with a contrasting colored border.
