All The Details Right Here
Dettling 48 Design and Construction
Motivated by a love for everything boats Ed Dettling set out to build the finest cruising yacht available. His original intention was to build one boat and cruise it in retirement. People took notice of his design and attention to detail and asked him to build a boat for them. Thus began Dettling Yachts. Dettling yachts are built without compromise, even on the smallest of details. The Raymond C. Hunt and associates designed hull is molded and the top deck installed before any interior work is performed. All components, ship systems, and joinery work is carried through the door leading into the vessel. Because of this, painstaking attention to detail is an absolute necessity. Much of the joinery work is done with hand tools resulting in tighter fits and finer finishes. All systems such as, lighting, electrical, engine components, refrigeration, and plumbing are designed and installed with maximum commitment to comfort and common sense.
Dettling 48 Vessel Walkthrough
The vessel is boarded just aft of midship through an access station in the railing. The first area seen after boarding and going aft is the aftdeck. The aftdeck boasts the only wood work on the exterior and is rich and inviting. The perimeter of the teak deck is open for drainage ensuring that any water taken over the rail is quickly drained away. The aftdeck will accommodate up to 6 guests comfortably and is intimate enough for an afternoon siesta. Teak table with 4 chairs with room to spare. Fiberglass dunnage box in this area as well. There is built in storage in the cabin bulkhead and the deck hatches lead to the engine room. Engine room has a primary access from the aft bulkhead inside the boat.
Forward of the aft deck are the side decks leading to the foredeck. The railings are substantial and are tall enough to provide a sense of security when going forward at sea. There is a Maxwell 2200 anchor windlass and capstan. The windlass, wash down port, and hooded vent are all stainless steel.
The dingy and davits are located off the transom keeping weight off the hardtop.Ã?Â
The pilot house door is on the port side of the aft cabin bulkhead and opens to the bridge area. The bridge area is two steps up onto a platform with a long couch like seating area that will accommodate four comfortably. The helm is located on the starboard side and is comfortable to operate. Gauges, electronics, helm, and throttles are logically placed and easy to reach. Visibility from the helm is one of the main design features of the Dettling 48. The approximate eye level when seated at the helm is roughly 10 feet above the water line, The side windows open, and the top hatches slide open. Ventilation to the helm is provided by a unique pass though from the fore deck. Water is channeled away from the ventilation ports via an interior fiberglass trough built into the top deck. This system is very effective and allows for fresh air to come into the cabin at cruising speed in all but the most severe conditions, without getting water in the boat. The tracks along the opening bridge deck windows are a custom designed and do an excellent job funneling water away from the windows.
There are steps leading down into the salon on the port side just forward of the bridge deck. The companion way is reminiscent of sailing vessels and provides a distinct separation between the topside and down below. The main salon is open and very comfortable. The tall windows provide tremendous natural light, and the curtains transform the area into an intimate living room setting. The floors are carpeted, there is an 'L' shaped settee on the starboard side with an adjustable pedestal table in front. There is a bar at the forward end of the salon that makes up to the galley. The ceiling is carpeted with varnished battens placed at interval.
There are two steps leading down into the aft guest cabin. The double size berth is on the port side and recesses into a cubby going forward. Above the bed are individual lights for reading. The guest head is on the starboard side of the cabin. The vanity is against the aft bulkhead and the head, shower, and washer and dryer are just forward of the vanity on the starboard side.
Engine room access is through a hatchway centered in the aft bulkhead. The engine room is well laid out with a fuel manifold on the port side center forward and four Racor fuel filters just aft of the manifold. The generator is on a pedestal, centerline aft and is enclosed in a sound dampening enclosure.
The u-shaped galley is located forward of the main salon with the sink, counter, and stove running transversely along the master stateroom bulkhead and bar. The high efficiency holding plate refrigerator is mounted fore to aft on the starboard side. There is a microwave oven flush-mounted above the refrigerator. There are two temperature gauges that passively monitor the refrigerator temperature flush mounted above the refrigerator.
The master stateroom is just forward of the galley and has a transverse mounted queen size, tapered berth with built in nightstands on either side and storage via built in drawers below the bed, under the nightstands, and along the starboard side bulkhead.
The master head is located forward of the master stateroom. There is a large sink and counter on the starboard side, the head is center forward, and the shower is to port.
There is a small access hatch centered in the forward master head bulkhead. This hatch leads to the chain locker and the 50 amp cord holding basket mounted under the 50 amp cord deck port.
